Willie Nelson and Neil Young will be performing at “Harvest the Hope Concert,” a benefit for Bold Nebraska and the Cowboy and Indian Alliance in their continued opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline. I’ve been busy already collecting reactions from the Canadian press (to include in my Whirl at the end of this week), and noticed a sort of, well, silence on the part of the government, too, reader. And thanks so much for underscoring “the probability” of a repeat of the Lac-Megantic disaster in the US.

You betcha, shootthatarrow! The history of those DOT-111s (from the ’60s, fer cryin’ out loud) is a very apt illustration of the contradiction between public safety needs and greedy profit-takers’ interests, who wins and who loses. Sheesh.

What shootthatarrow said, Knut! This was a FAIL all the way around. I’m sure the report will be subject to considerable analysis, including where the devil resides (in the details). Thanks for providing the first!

Sigh, darms. That saying does seem to apply at most any time, any place in this era in particular. Thnx to you for dropping by and checking in.

You bet, greenwarrior. Hope you get a chance to check out the report. It’s quite interesting and detailed.

    Many thnx!

Thanks ever so much for that follow-up, mafr. The price paid, and that will continue to be paid, for this terrible tragedy extends way off into the future, doesn’t it?

Meanwhile, they’re supposedly working to get those DOT-111/CTC-111s off the rails. Can’t happen soon enough. Should have happened a long time ago.

Thumbnail A report reveals new facts about the Lac-Mégantic disaster. On July 6, 2013, a freight train parked with the engine running and left unattended at Nantes, Quebec began rolling, pulling 72 tank cars carrying Bakken crude, a highly flammable oil, behind it. All cars were the old dangerous DOT-111A /CTC-111A type which have a capacity of 30,000 gallons of [...]

You sure do know how to wrap it all up, and tightly, shootthatarrow: “The stupidity of going this way and staying this way has become far too knowable and knowably damning.” Indeed.

Thanks so much for your recommendation and encouragement.

Thanks so much for the reminder about the slaughter of those 34 miners, normanb. Just sickening, the price that’s really paid for puncturing and extracting metals, minerals, oil and all the other things deep in the earth. That price is particularly steep for those who find their way of life, sometimes even their lives, at [...]

” Mining companies losing billions of dollars from conflicts with local communities,” according to researchers from the University of Queensland, the Harvard Kennedy School and Clark University. Not wanting to pass up an opportunity to hammer home that theme, here’s a bit of a round-up of just such recent activities, beginning with Bristol Bay. * REMINDER: Pebble [...]

Thank you, jane24. Dunno know what they are preparing for, what enemy they perceive. Delusional or war-toys enthusiasts? It is disturbing to have local police stockpiling such stuff, whatever the rationale. Maybe some counties will ask why, and publish the response. Might be interesting.

I had to go look up MRAP, Synoia, and learned that, while over 200 have been distributed, none made it to DE. Guess they just aren’t that scared in the Blue Hen State. Thnx so much!

Good lord, mzchief. That’s impressive, in a downright scary way. I saw the Firkin Tavern while looking at your link and must confess I’d more likely head down that way.

“It’s good we’ve touched the tip of the iceberg but it’s imperative the public see the details of the whole thing.” You said it perfectly, mischief. Thank you. And that thing they’ve got on the Willamette River–Jeebus!

Good to know about that app, tuezday, and speaking of GA, apparently some teens over in Gwinnett County are working on an app, too. As for the numbers seeming to be so low–all the more reason why accountability is so important, particularly when our tax dollars bought all that stuff. (I know, I know: dream on. [...]
