  • … so ridiculous when just opening Medicare to Everyone (and re-writing the coverages a little. maybe) Would totally bypass all this who-ha.

And the popularity? If there was some kind of flowchart / calculator to walk people through each situation then the popularity would sort itself out. Generally people are terrified of unknown changes. Let people know for sure what’s coming and they’d (we’d) have adapted to it by now. Maybe. Or maybe not. Since few of us can tell for sure how we will be affected by The Act.

  • Thank you, Blue Onyx!

Access to former employer’s plan is available (with no financial help from former employer) … It’s a HUGE expense though — over 25% of income.

I just can’t tell if the premiums (and cost protections) qualify for subsidies.

The language of every single summary of this bill that I’ve seen skips this situation.

  • When a person – a librarian at that – can spend years searching for specific answers to their own family’s situation then it becomes obvious that the whole thing is designed to be inefficient.

  • I have a question and I’ve read everything I can get my hands on to find the answer…. If a person gets their family’s health insurance through a former employer (administered by but not actually COBRA) and they can keep it until they reach medicare age …. do they qualify for subsidies?

Or are subsidies only available for policies purchased through exchanges?

Maybe the former employer’s policy is technically part of the exchange?

And is the full family premium weighed against the full family income to calculate the percentage of income that’s going toward premiums and or medical expenses?

I’ve spent hours – perhaps days – trying to find definitive answers to these questions. So any links or guidance would be very much appreciated.
