    There are plenty of photographs among all the people filming. Identify as many of the cops as possible and publish their names and general location. Then all who disagree with their actions don’t voluntarily associate with these government enforcers – no sales, no service, no camaraderie, no anything – who continue to remain in or seek these jobs even when approached with reasoned logic for getting one that truly produces value! This is shunning and ostracism, used down through the ages with considerable success towards modifying the others’ behavior viewed as unacceptable.

    So if you understand that enforcers – those who are willing to initiate physical force against others – are unacceptable in a society of voluntarily interacting individuals, then use the cumulative influence of the much larger number of non-enforcers.     Quite correct that “human nature” includes all types of behavior, only because that range has been demonstrated by some of all the individuals that have existed.

    Expanding – the nature of human beings does not automatically lead to the conclusion that individuals must be ruled by others, as is done now virtually everywhere, in order that there be orderly interactions between them. Society, just like any other natural system can be naturally self-regulating by means of interactions between its members, if only humans seek to discover and are allowed to implement the methods by which such self-regulation can be effective, rather than continuing to embrace social systems that need to be constantly held in an unnatural (and very unoptimal) state of balance by the operations of their rulers and other influencers. Individual self-order without rule by others is the social system whose members are humans, who have become fully adult. Just as people can become physical adults, so can they become social adults – if only they are allowed (and even required in the sense that they will not achieve their desires unless they do) to socially mature sufficiently.

    I am assuming that with the 2nd “we”, Glenn is referring to all humans. The obvious fact that follows, but which he doesn’t specifically state, is that humans (“we”) are individuals no matter what the commonly held beliefs (conclusions held as true without evidence) and practices (“culture”) in the general geographical area of a person. As for the 1st “we”, I am among the readers (and others who have not read this article) who have long been aware of this fact of human individuality, so generalizing to all readers (or humans) in this case is out of place.

    “We need to keep the antidote always at hand. And the best antidote, I think, is knowledge of our own dangerous, demonizing habits.”

    I say that the “antidote” to groupism (“group suspicion”) is to stop thinking of individuals as merely members of one or another group but rather as individuals whose individual actions (which are always based on ideas) need to be identified and evaluated for their further maximization of the evaluator’s own lifetime happiness – the purpose of each individual’s life whether or not s/he realizes it. Make an effort to catch one’s self and others – verbally or in writing – in the “pernicious habit”, pointing it out so as to more easily recognize it and bring about its cessation in one’s self and others. This is being self-responsible and requiring that others be the same.

    The widespread current acceptance of anonymity and tolerance of all ideas and most actions are both impediments to development of self-responsibility and counter to an orderly society. I will add that it is impossible for a self-ordered society without government to come to exist without such accountability even though the technological advances are highly supportive of almost instantaneous audio/visual communication between ever increasing numbers of individuals throughout the entire world, bypassing the longstanding, accepted as “necessary”, governments. And governments of course have come into existence, maintained and grown largely by promoting the “us and them” mentality – dependency on the “us” group and fear of the “them” group.

    Last minute item: I see Glenn’s response at 12:04pm 3/6 and disagree that “sort[ing] people into narrative roles — good guys, bad guys etc…is [v]ery necessary to our communication.” Such claims and practice actually promote distortion of communication.
    However Glenn is correct to state that “there is a profound difference between judging people who choose actions as opposed to judging people because of gender, race, sexual preference etc.”, though even with these latter there are chosen actions that will increase or decrease a biological tendency that accompanies one or more of them.

  • Beyond signing the petition above (which I have already done) and publicly condemning “the silence of those who would be howling in outrage had George Bush done the same thing”, I urge all who have any type of contact with CWO Denise Barnes and those who carry out her orders to withdraw all voluntary association with them.

    Even street protests are not enough, as I’ve tweeted considerably, nor even silent standing backwards at speeches by politicians (done by Ray McGovern in front of Hillery Clinton) and as I wrote in general in “Tax/Regulation Protests are Not Enough: Relationship of Self-Responsibility and Social Order” – http://selfsip.org/focus/protestsnotenough.html

    Making it personally uncomfortable to continue to be an issuer of and especially an enforcer of inhumane orders is what is needed. Shunning/ostracism is a very effective long used nonviolent method for social change (as pointed out by Gene Sharp in his works on nonviolent social change). To continue voluntary association with such government order givers and government enforcers is hypocritical of anyone who is opposed to these actions.

  • After making a comment at the blog of Bradley Manning’s civilian lawyer – http://bit.ly/hCv6IM – I wanted to know what CWO Denise Barnes looks like and be able to direct others to a photograph to enable negative Social Preferencing of her for her orders to continue and even increase the severity of detention for Bradley Manning, who has not been convicted of a crime and is not deemed by any psychiatrist to be a suicide risk. So I did some Internet searching.

    I suspect that the photo accompanying the announcement at Marine Corps Base Quantico website of the “Pre-Trial Confinement Facility” commanding officer change has changed in the last several weeks. It currently is only an emblem of the base but the verbiage below is:

    This information will now enable those who disapprove of the treatment of Bradley Manning to withdraw voluntary association with this particular giver of inhumane orders. Next would be shaming and shunning of the enforcers of her orders, if they do not cease being government enforcers entirely.
