konst commented on the blog post On Ron Paul and Progressivism
From the quoted text:
Paul wondered, referring to a time in American history when drugs were legal on the federal, and, in many towns, local level.
I think progressives have that mistaken view that the U.S. is a hierarchy with federal at the top and states subjugated to the whims of the federal government. Going out on a limb here but I don’t think such a view exist anywhere in the legal framework of U.S. federal and state law regarding the relationships between the states and federal government.
Progressives seem invest themselves and depend on this mythical hierarchical structure to push their agenda through. That structure is just not real. Ron Paul’s view of the federal government reflects that reality.
A President doesn’t really have much power but there are a few things the President can do and one of them is to END THE WARS and thereby saving a ton of money. That would at least end the injustice abroad and reduce the pressure to spend abroad rather than in the U.S.

I could provide you with links comparing different energy options but I doubt you would be interested.
Here is an ebook you might look at though. It’s called “Sustainable Energy – without the hot air”
It’s free and by Prof. David MacKay of Cambridge University

Nuclear apparently did survive a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. Not every place on earth has 9.0 earthquakes and tsunamis so anti-nuclear proponents can’t use that argument everywhere. By the way, solar isn’t practical cause solar radiation is too diffuse, meaning not enough per unit area, to provide enough energy for cities. Small towns may be [...]

The nuclear plant operators are required to prove to the NRC that they are safe. Don’t you trust regulators?
Nuclear plants do not get subsidies. Loan guarantees are like cosigned loans not subsidies.

George Monbiot: How the Fukushima disaster taught me to stop worrying and embrace nuclear power
There are no ideal solutions. Every energy technology carries a cost; so does the absence of energy technologies. Atomic energy has just been subjected to one of the harshest of possible tests, and the impact on people and the planet has been [...]

IF you think solar, wind, or a combination of the is practical than you have to prove it just like nuclear plants are required to prove they are safe.
Spain and other countries tried it and it doesn’t work.

One thing many people don’t understand. If you live in California YOU are the decision makers for California.
However I doubt many people will make good decisions since they lack a good science education and don’t understand how impractical it is to run cities on solar and wind power.

I suggest you read the comments in Amy Goodman’s fear mongering article. I think she is otherwise a good journalist but that article is inexcusable. Read the comments from Europeans to see what they think.

I know people here will hate or attack me for saying this but this and so many other diaries says to let fear and ignorance make your decisions not logic and scientific knowledge. That’s what any intelligent person would expect of the failed U.S. education system which seems to value anti-science and anti-mathematics rather than [...]

“Indian Point’s potential vulnerability is a matter of serious concern for New Yorkers.” No it’s not. I’m a New Yorker and it’s not a concern to me. I’m not afraid of nuclear energy unlike most Americans since I actually learned something in school and college unlike most Americans. Contrast the fear of nuclear power in [...]

Thanks for the info. Just skimmed the article for now. My opinion regarding Japan is there hasn’t been enough time for radioactive elements to get into the food chain yet. I don’t think what’s been detected is from the Fukushima nuclear incident. On another note what happened to the Japan nuclear watch? The updates seem [...]

One possible way they may guess about the water level of the spent fule pool at unit #4 is they may use a satellite to measure heat in the SFP and calculate what the water level might be.
