This is impressive — as activism…and as journalism.

Bruce H. Vail commented on the blog post ABC’s Tapper Asks John McCain! For Advice on Picking a VP
On the other hand, you would be totally justified in criticizing Tapper for not reaching across the table and smacking Fox Scold VanSustern for her passionate attack on John Edward’s decision to have sex with a woman not his wife.
I’m sure they are still scratching their heads about that one at FOXHQ in NY.

Bruce H. Vail commented on the blog post ABC’s Tapper Asks John McCain! For Advice on Picking a VP
Department of Alternate Reality:
I saw this on teevee this morning and your theme that Tapper is an idiot is off base.
Most of the interview was on the subject of foreign affairs and Tapper artfully drew McCain out to articulate his nutty view that new wars with Iran and Syria should be undertaken immediately.
The hunt for Romney’s VP was a major story this week and Tapper lobbed him a softball on a question that McCain is actually well-qualified to answer (unlike war v peace). McCain did not answer in a thoughtful or interesting way, but that is not Tapper’s fault.
Lay off Tapper and pick on somebody your own size!

Shareholders voted down pay package for Constellation Energy CEO Mayo Shattuck at the most recent annual meeting. The company refused to make any changes and paid out all the money anyway. Vive la 1 percent!

Here is some info about some recent efforts in Maryland:

Excellent reporting, Michelle.
Progress at the level of federal law is politically impossible right now, but some progress has been made at the state level. I believe states like Mich., NY, Md, and others have been able to adopt measures to allow unionization of home health care workers….

This would be a welcome development…. were it not for the fact that anybody paying attention knows that Robertson is suffering from dementia.

Hah!!
I suspect that Imus is just jealous that Rush gets away with all of this crap, while he gets taken to the woodshed.

Bruce H. Vail commented on the blog post The Chances of Driving Rush Limbaugh Off Commercial Radio
To suggest that Don Imus suffered some terrible fate because of his obnoxious comments isn’t quite right.
His radio show was being simulcast on MSNBC, and when his “nappy headed ho” comments generated protests, MSNBC cut him loose.
But he continued to have his radio show, and Fox Business News soon came in to hire him for a daily simulcast on cable TV.
So Imus may have suffered a blow to his pride, and a marginal reduction in his large income, but it didn’t end his radio career by any means, and he is still an overpaid obnoxious jerk polluting the airwaves.

I fear that some of the commenters here on the draft are too young to remember the actual draft.
There was nothing democratic about it, and it did contribute to a more sensible public debate on the use of military power.
Re-introducing involuntary servitude is not an answer to any of our problems.

“No, I mean what I said. The war was a just cause.”
That’s a rather startling statement. It was a “just cause” for the German and Japanese governments too, by their own lights.
I’d say rather that for the US the war an unavoidable bloodbath that was relatively well managed by our government of the day. There wasn’t anything just about it.

I hope you mean that US participation in WWII was justified because this country was attacked by the Axis powers, not that the war itself was just.

It’s notable that Luce’s ideas about global leadership for the US seemed to focus obsessively on China.
So was the American Century really over before it began, when China was “lost”to the Communists in 1949?

I think Life Magazine was actually a ‘force’ right up till the end of Vietnam War.
There was something in the end of the Vietnam War that put an end to Life’s exuberant expression of the American empire.
And Life even had a role in ending the war. Who can forget the week when they published photos of all the American boys killed that week (1968, I think).
Any thoughts?

It’s worth noting that Fresh Del Monte is not some faceless multinational corporation. It’s a US company, with many US-citizen officers, and relies on millions of US consumers for the profits that keep it going.
