has anyone posted this “no protest” bill the house just passed?
http://rt.com/usa/news/348-act-tresspass-buildings-437/“The US House of Representatives voted 388-to-3 in favor of H.R. 347 late Monday, a bill which is being dubbed the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011. In the bill, Congress officially makes it illegal to trespass on the grounds of the White House, which, on the surface, seems not just harmless and necessary, but somewhat shocking that such a rule isn’t already on the books. The wording in the bill, however, extends to allow the government to go after much more than tourists that transverse the wrought iron White House fence.
Under the act, the government is also given the power to bring charges against Americans engaged in political protest anywhere in the country.”

lindaj commented on the blog post Corporate Tax Reform Will Be Painful for Whatever Is Left of the Middle Class
Yup! Having worked on two Nader campaigns, seen single payer work & now campaign finance reform usurped by Dem operatives, I don’t think 3rd party presidents are the answer. Especially since 70-80% of liberals support Obama droning U.S. citizens.

Same goes for the $$ we spend arming your buddy Israel, Alan.
Different kind of occupation there (ours was more “successful” and there are barely any Indians left).
My hope is we will quit giving money to a country who is trying to copy our dastardly pattern and get rid of the Palestinians.

Deep down, he must believe that those mechanics and school teachers who voted in Obama and the Democrats aren’t capable of making decisions about the future of society.
If they voted for Obama, he may be right!
I always disagree with people who say they want the democrats to “get a backbone.” If they had a backbone, they’d use it to walk over and stomp on us some more.
We need a reset on our electoral system.

lindaj commented on the blog post It’s Always Been a Class War
“If we had more economists like Sachs…”
You [Namoi Klein] mention the shift from shock therapy to shock-and-awe, but there are also attempts to soften the image of neoliberalism. Jeffrey Sachs, the economist who pioneered shock therapy [with regard to Soviet Union, e.g.], wrote his latest book on The End of Poverty. Is there any more to this than a rebranding exercise?
A lot of people are under the impression that Jeffrey Sachs has renounced his past as a shock therapist and is doing penance now. But if you read The End of Poverty more closely he continues to defend these policies, but simply says there should be a greater cushion for the people at the bottom.
The real legacy of neoliberalism is the story of the income gap. It destroyed the tools that narrowed the gap between rich and poor. The very people who opened up this violent divide might now be saying that we have to do something for the people at the very bottom, but they still have nothing to say for the people in the middle who’ve lost everything.
This is really just a charity model. Jeffrey Sachs says he defines poverty as those whose lives are at risk, the people living on a dollar a day, the same people discussed in the Millennium Development Goals. Of course that needs to be addressed, but let us be clear that we’re talking here about noblesse oblige, that’s all.

Murray is my senator. She is already trying to warn off locals from trying to influence her. She “asked critics of her new assignment to back off and let the panel do its job.” http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2015874585_murray11m.html She also wants time to “allow us the ability to look each other in the eyes and find common values [...]

Regarding replacing congress critters: I would not spare my congressperson (Jim McDermott) even though he voted against it. The so-called Progressive Caucus should have been out in front of the White House doing press conferences every day since this (and all the other) fake crisis started. Just voting doesn’t isn’t enough, as we know only [...]

lindaj commented on the diary post Debt Ceiling Hostage Taking. The Banality of Corporate State Propaganda and Belief In Things Not Real. by Michael Monk.
If people would champion their issues instead of just voting and hoping for their candidate has integrity, we could hold these politicians accountable. It is probably too late to implement this now, but being an independent and voting on issues is one way of stopping the slide toward corporatism.
Thank you for this post.

lindaj commented on the blog post Bernie Sanders to Primary Obama? Don’t Make Me Laugh
Remember in the Michael Moore movie when someone said the government of France is scared of its people and the people of America are scared of their government?
We need to make make principled demands of our government and then unite to press them, instead of casting around for someone who we think “might” represent us. We have to have constant pressure, not vote and go home pressure.
I hope some of you are coming to DC in October 2011 http://october2011.org/welcome

“…context is important.”
Yes, it is. In 1948, Israel landed on top of the Palestinians and has been trying to push them out ever since.
For some reason, the Palestinians object.
Fixed your context for ya.
