I looked for John’s ideas here on a regular basis. I will miss his voice.

As a father nearing the end of my own road, I’m particularly touched by your tribute, Chris. I sure your father would be pleased. Thank you for this post.

Republicans have needed a dic fix for a long time. Glad to see they are finally getting around to it.

Interesting — so far, the reports suggest that this is evidence of something short of recriticality. Still sounds bad, though. The second NHK article makes the point that this has to be understood and brought under control before “cold shutdown” can be declared. I’m looking around for more detailed accounts of the Xe amounts.

Thumbnail This is a must-read for those of you who have been following the Fukushima accident.  Authors from the Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers reconstruct the early days of the Fukushima accident with the latest public information.  As stated in the margin:

THIS REPORT is based on interviews with officials from the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), [...]

Barack Obama is governing exactly as Joe Lieberman would have. Short Ride was voted out of the party, largely to the credit of FDL.

I note that Jane has not yet declared all out war on Obama. I think that the calculus of the current administration is roughly right, to the extent that while many on the left may not bother to vote, we aren’t yet actively and visibly working against him. Oct 6 may change that. I hope so.

I was still working precincts in 1994. I didn’t bother to vote for Clinton/Gore in 1996 (b/c of the policies, not the rest of it). I didn’t vote for Gore/Lieberman in 2000 (because Gore was acting like a DLCer. I followed Michael Moore and voted for Nader).

A big part of the reason I am angry is that I thought the flame-out of 2000 had suppressed the DLC ConservaDem wing of the Democratic Party.

If I wanted a Republican president, I would vote for one. It is amazing how long it has been since a liberal president slept in the White House. Maybe it never actually happens.

    Sigh.

I think the plot shows exactly what happens when Democrats suck up to Wall Street and other big money. The country is hungry for a bit of idealism.

After Obama’s disgraceful hectoring of the CBC, someone ought to come up with a graphic of Obama in blackface. That isn’t exactly what I’m talking about in the post, but the point is in the same direction. He should not pretend to be more or less than he is, and what he values is rich [...]

Right. Those things can be true AND he can be Joe Lieberman’s twin brother, too. I find myself in the camp that hopes the Republicans lose the presidential election, but I really, really don’t want Obama to pretend to be a liberal in this race. For lack of a better analogy, it would be a [...]

Fukushima update of note: TEPCO says their liability for the Fukushima accidents, currently estimated to be around $60 billion, is so big that need to restart their other nuclear power stations (whatever the locals might think).

Nobody could have predicted that one.

Not many links and no radiation in this post.  Instead, I want to test a frame with my friends at FDL. In 2008, President Obama ran on the Hope and Change platform, not as a liberal. It was clear enough then that he was a centrist, establishment candidate. He allowed people to see liberal “shadows” [...]

That’s a correct comparison, I believe, taking into account only cesium-137. There are major differences, though. There were tens of thousands of radiation-induced deaths after the Hiroshima bomb, with a large number in the first 20 days after the attack. Clearly there is a difference, right? The difference is that there were a lot more [...]

What is happening there is bad but I think you are taking it too far, jadez. Don’t give up hope and don’t panic.

The radiation in the US that came from Fukushima is really tiny. We have other, much greater risks to worry about.
