The privileges corporations enjoy, such as peace, infrastructure, “flexible” labor force, law and order, etc. should come with a set of obligations to society, such as working for the common good and contributing to the nation. Of course, this notion that rights come with duties goes against the notion of individual freedom to pursue profit. [...]

Maybe people think there are more important things that having a job for the glory of GDP growth, like studying and taking care of children and parents.

I do not see any direct relation between higher rates of participation in the labor force and national well-being.

“Well could somebody please tell me where the money has gone?”

Quite a bit has gone to fighting wars of choice, buying US Treasuries and, in general, helping the US maintain global military and financial hegemony.

Being the US’ poodle comes with its costs.

    No mention of military spending?

No mention of the US dollar and the US’ AAA (now AA+ with negative outlook)rating being at the core of the global financial system?

    Why?

Your post is a very good description of decadence, and yet, you did not use the word. However, I do not believe the world at large is going through this process. For example, the Arab world is having its Spring, China is strongly emerging as a world power, all Uruguayan children have been given a [...]

I obviously did not explain myself adequately. I meant to equate overeating on junk food with paying for wars of choice with debt. Police, health, education are supposed to be the vegetables in my metaphor. I also meant to distinguish between spending money you have with going into debt to spend. I am pretty sure [...]

“On the bright side, BarryO has probably solved the immigration problem by turning it into an emigration problem.”

Actually, congress is counting on immigrants to fluff up the labor force and thus grow GNP. From the CBO report:

“CBO has raised its long-term projection of immigration, which implies faster growth in the labor force.”

Seems the deficit will be even higher than projected since the foreign worker population has shrunk by half a million per year during the past three years.

People also forget: 9) World’s savings stand at $7.5 trillion, so even if debt is not capped by congress, it is capped by reality. 10) Citizens around the world would prefer to use their national savings to save their own region (if you are European) or develop their own country (if you are a 3rd [...]

Just to put this number in perspective, the reserves (savings) of the entire world are $7.5 trillion. I find it very curious to read all these posts about your concern for suffering poor orphans and widows and yet nobody mentions how all that money is wasted on imperial delusions.
