David, one of the reasons I surmise is that the DC Circuit Court of Appeals handles all of the National Security issues like stuff for the CIA, the NSA, the DOD and the DOJ.

The Repugs have stacked the DC Circuit over the last decade with conservative wackos like Judges Janice Rogers Brown who recently ruled in the Latiff case that rendered habeus corpus effectively null and void for Gitmo detainees.

Just like the Repugs have stacked the Supreme Court with their conservative wacko nominees, so too are the Repugs ensuring that the DC Circuit will not get in their way in establishing their Wingnut Millenium.

It has been a decades-long sabotage effort to realign the Federal courts to the wingnuts’ liking, and we can thank Edwin Meese for the pleasure.

The Democrats, the ones who even deign to worry about this, dare not confront the Repugs. On this matter, if you stacked all of the Senate Democrats together, you wouldn’t find enough principled backbone to fill a thimble.

Yeah, bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities first must be an act of self-defense by the nuclear-armed Israel. Just like bombing Syria’s purported nuclear facilities first was an act of self-defense by the nuclear-armed Israel. Just like stealing someone else’s land is perfectly legal by Israel’s standards. Amazing how some people can justify anything illegal and criminal [...]

  • “Class warfare” is the new Repug attack buzzword. It’s getting repeated everywhere in the MSM.

I always find it peculiarly odd that the MSM never seems to remark on the fact that the Repugs always accuse others of what they themselves are guilty of.

Repugs have been conducting “class warfare” for decades.

“Class warfare” in support of the permanent ruling overclass of MOTU billionaires, millionaires, and other sundry robber barons.

“Class warfare” against the poor, the minorities, and the middle class.

“Class warfare” against unions, teachers, scientists, and government workers.

The outrage that Repugs express today with their charges of “Class warfare” are only outweighed by depth of their beliefs in their own lies.

  • Simply stunning Jane!

I’m from Minnesota, so I know and despise TPaw. But having said that, this bolded part of the quote from over at Politico is TPaw admitting the truth:

…“What I brought forward, I thought, was a rational, established, credible, strong record of results, based on experience governing — a two-term governor of a blue state,” said Pawlenty. “But I think the audience, so to speak, was looking for something different.”

Very simply, TPaw is admitting what we all know, and the MSM refuses to speak out loud: “The Crazies want a Crazy.”

After their loss in the 2008 elections, the only folks left willing to be identified as Republicans were the Crazies.

As I said of the Republicans at the time, “When all you have left is Crazy, you go with Crazy.”

I now would add the following corollary: “When you go with Crazy, all you get is Crazy.”

David, you might find this link of value to your post:

    Special Operators in Action

Of the 20 highest-ranked unstable nations — the 2010 Failed States Index — special operators are found in 14 (70%). If you were to overlay a world-wide map of Special Operations from this project’s database onto the Failed States map, special operators would appear in nearly all of the volatile regions, ranging from South Asia, where they are training Pakistani paramilitary officers, to the Caribbean, where they have helped hurricane victims in Haiti and elsewhere. Special operators have also conducted missions in relatively stable countries…

…The database and maps created for this project track 346 missions around the world, from 2001 to 2010, and illustrate the scope of Special Operations (a summary of each event is in document at right…”

  • I think torture, in various different ways, was more commonplace than is known, and certainly, than the US government would ever admit.

The CIA and its steroid-fueled Special Activities Division are one the known perps. Another was the US Armed forces, and particularly by its Special Operations forces.

The former likely practiced torture out of a typical lack of discipline one finds in war (former Lieutenant Colonel and now Repug Congressman Allen West springs to mind), and the later more likely as deliberate methods to “own the souls” of those they wanted to interrogate.

If I had to guess, I’d think the majority of torture was done by Special Operations folks, and given the inherent secrecy in every facet of their existence, any effort to investigate them would be the hardest slog investigators could imagine given the almost impenetrable veil of secrecy Special Operations exists under.

  • I can’t see any Congressional action coming out of these revelations. With the exception of a few folks like your mention of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, I’m guessing that most Congresscritters don’t want to know about things like this and have no intention of finding out.

Ta on this post and your Truthout piece Jeff!
