Politically, of course, this is part of the bishops’ and the hard right’s (a redundant description) national campaign to restrict or ban access to constitutionally protected rights under the guise of religious “freedom” and budgetary arguments. Mr. Obama can be relied upon to cave on both fronts.
Viewed from the other side, it’s a play for the religion industry to expand their political activities. I say beat them back by going after their tax exemptions. Don’t even argue the issue, they shouldn’t be participating.

That’s because it’s a stupid topic that makes for an easy election-year “debate.” Choose something that everybody-including-the-supreme-court has already made their decisions about, then use it to pretend there’s a difference between R’s & D’s. Both sides want culture-war topics to be front and center, rather than the bankers and military.

Sure, but the past couplefew decades have given us enough centrists from both parties in Congress to continually stymie his crazier policies. Furthermore, I’ll bet good American dollars we’d see some legislation limiting Executive Orders and other unitary privileges if it ever looks like he has the slightest chance of winning.
