This is too hastily written. “saying” makes it sound like the Republicans said it, so I had to read it three times. I still don’t know who the SUBJECT of your piece is, because you don’t bother to name him or describe the incident in question. Weak.

Good analysis, but you write as if we live in a world where any new corporate advantage to be reaped from such machinations wouldn’t take precedence over the midterm vote in the first place. The default approach is always to write law for the ruling class and make shit up to sell it as you go. You wish things like the truth mattered, but while it may operate below the surface. . .

  • There’s plenty of right-wing admiration for Putin out there, if you examine the message boards; he is essentially a winger himself and–let’s face it–these people like strongmen. And they believe in/get nationalism. They loved Hussein, too. And a lot of them admired Hitler. Not that Putin is Hitler, but he is certainly a thug.

Our world wars have in many ways been disputes between capitalist elites. The virtuous “rules” of capitalism only pertain for us plebes. Ruling elites make them up as they go along.

Further, the period of rapacious cowboy capitalism that put the former Soviet Republics and especially Russia back in the west’s grasp was aided, abetted, and profited from by many western financial interests.

Yet another consideration for the business community–Germany has its hooks deep in Russia, and is highly dependent on its oil (one reason why Angela Merkel keeps making public statements about keeping the enmity under control). We don’t want to be left out in the New Cold.

  • It’s a slippery slope, however–soon we’ll be questioning the way we treat a host of other creatures, or even our fellow human beings!

Good stuff! Had me going! German and Russian interests dovetail a LOT more than is commonly understood.

Appreciate the link to the Counterpunch fascism piece; quite strong. Fascism is one outcome of capitalism in crisis:

If we can turn our Righteous Outrage meters down long enough to look past the stupid, I think we’ll see that this is hugely helpful stuff. It’s GREAT when the clown-haters stage public parades like this, and even the half-insane have to beg them to shut up–do you think the Republican National Committee or someone like Jeb likes the tenor of an initiative that so obviously erodes what little credibility the Republican Party has with most Americans? Do you think the town fathers in Atlanta and Coca-Cola, desperately trying to build tourist traffic to places like the King Center, welcome any of this? There’s a very obvious positive benefit.

Just sitting around massaging one another, as is pretty much the practice here, about how awful these people are. . . somewhat dubious. It’s capitalism that’s killing us; this is just the sideshow that they’re happy to have you sit around and cluck at.

Good news, of course–at least in the short term. But the fact that we are 6 years into an Obama admin and middle class and liberal America still doesn’t know that Obama was trying to kill them with this is a wretched, wretched, wretched state of affairs.

“This is what I wanted health care reform to do in the United States, or at least move us in this direction. I want a health care system not an overlapping web of corporate scams machines often backed by the government.”

    Man, were you naive.

Just re-read my last post and should stress that I’m arguing against received notions of Florida, not against the OP; perhaps I am anticipating them too much in these posts; dunno.

Yes, there is a great deal of white southern working class resentment. It pains me that liberals don’t see that these are the people that we need to reach, politically, but simply–lamely and superficially, often–demonize them. The story of poor black-white cooperation in the South still remains to be told. Making white poor and middle [...]

Just a few insights from someone who has lived in Tallahassee for 10 years and loves it–the gulf coast remains totally unspoiled and is the most biodiverse place in N. America; very interesting culturally, with strong oyster, fishing culture and fascinating interface between blacks and whites. And fucking beautiful. Very happy that almost no one [...]

Kudos on your settings of the Beach pieces, btw; the orchestra sounds neat. I am a Boaz fan myself.

My comment wasn’t directed toward the PCUSA, btw, but to how things more generally work. It’s the reason why I hold little with liberal discussion about “ethics.” Until we abolish the exploitative underlying system encouraging people to act better will only take us so far. Obama too is against killing; but he kills.

Well, with the caveat that I offered–”theology” is not about truth in any scientific sense to begin with. And yes–a helpful move by PCUSA. But my (somewhat materialist) point is that ideology is always an effect of already-existing conditions, and that societies make it up post-hoc as they go along, getting their living in historically [...]

Respectfully, I’m not buying this. Francis and the church may just be settling into the pattern of most so-called liberal democracies, in which it is good corporate practice to give lip service to equality, but which continue to be led when push comes to shove by investor capitalism that demands 20% profits and continues to [...]

You never go too far wrong if you follow the money first and see the “theology” as the post-hoc attempt to justify the avaricious bloodletting.

You might want to give this book a read: http://www.amazon.com/Zionism-Age-Dictators-Lenni-Brenner/dp/1556520778 Would be interested in the opinions of other anti-Zionist Jewish writers and observers here about Brenner and his writing. My uncle was a self-described “anti-Zionist Trotskyist” himself as a youth, and–through him–I grew up with the understanding that not all Jews were Zionists. But I [...]
