Matthew Detroit commented on the blog post Remarks by NAACP national on marriage equality: this is one of the key civil rights struggles of our time
Can’t say how happy this makes me! But I must also add that while the alleged divide between gays and black people has been made out to be one of race, and to be bigger than it is, it has other sides. There is considerable racism among some groups of gay people, as I discovered while living in San Francisco in the 1980s. (Being gay by itself doesn’t make one any more progressive than being black, although it certainly can breed compassion for others.) And it is very much a matter of the capture of poor black people by right-wing Christian ideology, especially here in the south, where Obama and Clinton acquiescence to the expansion of welfare service caregiving to churches has abetted its growth. In communities where black peoples’ very survival sometimes feels like it is in question (one in three black men doing time for drug crimes, etc., obscenely high black infant mortality rate where I live in N. FL) the call to close ranks and exclude “aberrant” behavior can have dangerous appeal. In the end, I remain incredibly hopeful about acceptance of gay behavior, but we must all be more forthright in renouncing all forms of fundamentalism, which share much in common.

Matthew Detroit commented on the diary post Ending the Mindset That Gets Us Into War by David Swanson.
Not a mindset, an economy. Difference between an idealist approach that would wish evil away and a materialist one that knows an evil system has to be dismantled to get there.

Sorry, but predicating every article on what some twit says in the WaPo just isn’t doing it for me anymore. I’ve stopped reading these.

Matthew Detroit commented on the blog post Reid: Rubio’s DREAM Act Doesn’t Have Any Language to Support
What Rubio doesn’t get is the punitive desire that lurks behind nativist resentment of immigrants, desire no legislation can appease. None of these clowns even bother to notice that everyone who can is leaving in droves; the anger will remain long after the last Mexican citizen has fled this country.

Matthew Detroit commented on the blog post RNC head Reince Priebus signals party’s support for ENDA on Meet the Press
How mindlessly opaque is the statement that “marriage is between a man and a woman”?

Matthew Detroit commented on the blog post Obama Confirms Support of Marriage Equality
We voted for him as the guy who would speak truth to power. Now we defend him as the guy who would get killed if he spoke the truth. So today he came out in defense of gay marriage, and I salute this fact–my dad was gay and suffered life-long for it. But yesterday we drone-bombed five Afghani children to pieces, and not only didn’t the president apologize, it didn’t even make the news. Until these things BOTH have meaning for liberals I have no use for liberals.

Was it someone here who posted that Germany had all the bigwigs of the two mainstream in its pockets because they had received huge kickbacks for arms purchases from Germany? Would love to know if that is true. . .

And so Dean Baker’s mano a mano struggle with the WaPo continues.

Matthew Detroit commented on the blog post ENDA: That’s the Sound of Jim Messina’s Blood Curdling
While we fight for gay rights we ignore that these donors are capitalist fat cats. See the film about Hormels bad meat, their union busting, their mistreatment of Mexican workers. This is why liberalism–and identitarian politics–are dead, morally bankrupt, a spent force, why an Obama can keeop the likes of Jane Hamsher running on the hamster wheel all day and night without getting anywhere.

Matthew Detroit commented on the blog post Parish The Thought
I disagree. We live in a rape culture, where women are implicitly threatened with it continually, and where the rape of tens of thousands of prisoners is ignored annually. Would that everyone were like you and thought it just as awful.

Matthew Detroit commented on the blog post Parish The Thought
Well, it’s ugly–we should probably call it RAPE. But it’s not pedophilia, you’re aware of that? I had to look it up to sort out the distinctions for myself, but pedophilia involves sexual molestation of pre-pubescent kids.
Pedophilia is much more demonized than rape in our culture, and the term “pedophile priests” stirs the pot pretty nicely against the church. I don’t think he gets much mileage with his argument among us lay folk, but his audience may be all of those people who rep the CC before the wider public, and ways to play the very damaging issue.
Ninety-five Jews in Brooklyn still doesn’t measure up to a century or so of Catholic crazy, but whatever. . .

Love and admire your work, Dean, but every single post plays off of something the MSM media–usually the WaPo–does or says. As with endless scrutiny of the Sunday talk shows here, I just don’t get it. OF COURSE these guys are idiots–let’s make our own world, huh? Let’s point the way OURSELVES.

Unbelievable that this highly sophisticated WH PR machine can cause more commotion by scrambling to undo Biden’s simple statements than by just letting them lie.

Still an a**hole millionaire, with Haitian blood on his hands. Buttonhole a progressive Haitian sometime and get the story. Sold out welfare in a panic so he could cinch an election he already had won, making millions of people much more miserable NOW, when the shit from his killing of Glass-Steagall finally came down. American flags and military salutes, my yassyassyass.

Don’t bother. I just googled police departments military veterans and got a big ol’ pile of hits, including several PD vet recruitment notices. Scary.
