Good for these students for fighting back! Sadly, I don’t think this is an isolated incident. There was a story in my local Vermont paper about Peruvian college students on J-1 visas experiencing similar kinds of exploitation in Vermont.

While Deb Richter has certainly worked tirelessly on single-payer, the legislation enacted today would not have been possible without the grassroots movement the VWC built over the past three years. I would encourage anyone interested in learning how to build and sustain a similar movement for universal healthcare in their own state to look at the model the VWC used.

How out of touch do you have to be to plant an organic garden at the White House and then deny millions of Americans the right to eat and grow organic foods? This is the worst kind of elitism.

David, you’re wrong about the primary grassroots group organizing in Vermont. Vermont for Single Payer is involved, but the Vermont Workers’ Center has played a pivotal role in organizing and mobilizing thousands of Vermonters to get this done. They launched their campaign in 2008 and single-payer in Vermont would not be possible without them.
In fact, in the link you provide on the rally, you can see the bright red t-shirts that are a focal point of their campaign along with a campaign poster showing “rosie the riveter” as a nurse. These are Vermont Workers’ Center materials.

I would encourage anyone interested in the Vermont Campaign to check out the Workers’ Center website for more information. Their campaign is truly inspiring.

The Center’s “Healthcare is a Human Right Campaign” played a pivotal role in passage of healthcare reform legislation. They continue to organize and mobilize ordinary Vermonters to demand universal healthcare as a basic human right. Their story is incredibly powerful and inspriring. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a Vermonter.

The Senate is holding a TSA oversight hearing tomorrow. I would urge people who are concerned about this issue to contact their Senators-especially if they serve on the committee.
