  • “In other words, we’re once again strapped to the mast, unwilling passengers subject to the whims of a driver who hasn’t shown much concern for our interests in the past.”

This is true if only Dems and Repubs count. Looking at it from the european political viewpoint, it is possible to raise awareness of a true desire for policy change by going beyond the 2-party system. I for one won’t vote Obama any more, and I intend to push an alternative candidate, whether Dem challenger in the primary (sanders, grayson, …), or a green / alternative in the general elections. I won’t let my vote be coopted by the post-vote corrupting powers that have doomed the Obama presidency.

Some have mentioned in the above thread that not voting Obama could imply going to the slaughterhouse sooner, but that one way or another we are nevertheless headed for the slaughterhouse. I couldn’t agree more, and since I don’t want the country to go to the slaughterhouse, I intend to stray away from the two party voting logic.

In Europe, the pirate party just ousted the center party from the Berlin legislature (That’s the party that’s supposedly ruling with right-wing Merkel in a coalition), while the Land of Baden – Wurttemberg has gone Socalist/Green this year after 60 years of right wing rule. Things can change, and they can outside of the traditional left/right voting blocks. It is high time that the US politics diversify itself. Heck, our best hope at real change within the 2-party system came in the form of Barack Obama … and left again. An additional lesson from the Berlin vote while i’m at it: despite a large majority obtained between Socialists/Greens (and die Linke, the shadey leftist former East German party), the Socialists have decided to assemble another bastard coaltion with the right-wing (CDU). This shows how the two traditional voting blocks, even in Germany, are merging.

One could say the same of Dems and Repubs.

According to me, unless grassroots efforts transform the Dem party, we may as well seek representation through another party. To do so, we need to break the 5% barrier for representation and media coverage.

So, to summarize it simply, I would move to dump the Dem party and focus on another political party to pin our hopes for transformation on. Greens? Another? Hint: who’s backing the #occupywallstreet protests?
