The “proper” use of utensils in eating has always been a social class marker. What you are talking about is just further Balkenization of the classes.
When the Earl of Sandwich was seen by his peers eating mutton between slices of toast WITH HIS FINGERS they were aghast. But then again Sandwich was fairly high class so suckups aped him but didn’t know what to call the cutlery-less dish. If they had paid any attention to their servants or people in the street they would know that it was called “bread and meat”. Maybe they did know this but felt that calling it a “sandwich” was essential to preserving class distinctions.
