Dude, don’t forget batshit crazy wingnut Ted Nugent was also a member of that seminal (pronounced “semen-al”) band.
Great guitarist, but what a tool. And from my home state to boot. At least we have Iggy.

Late to the party, but anyway…I’ve seen Bruce Sterling’s name, but unless I missed it, nobody has recommended Schismatrix. It’s as essential as Gibson’s Neuromancer for anyone who digs cyberpunk, and IMHO it’s better. Philip Jose Farmer is quoted as saying it’s a “tsunami of imagination” and that is an apt description. Get the “complete” version, that is, the one with the Schismatrix novel and the five (I think) short stories set in the same universe.
Along with everyone else who has mentioned them, I heartily recommend Banks, Ellison, Mieville, Vinge, and Vonnegut. And I agree with the fellow who recommends Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, even though it’s fantasy, just because it’s so goddamn good. Less than a month until the series premiere on HBO! I’m hoping it’s as good as some of HBO’s past series…we will see.
