Thank you so much for this most enlightening piece of intellectual history. I think (hope) this work will lead to a reinvigoration of American intellectual history which, I believe has been moribund since Richard Hofstadter (Bernard Bailyn and Gordon Wood not withstanding). I am gettin’ a copy to take with me for a month in Florida and will present it to my math-teacher daughter who is teaching geometry for the first time this year began by hating it.

Have the two of you thought about doing another project on Jefferson or others of the American enlightenment with regard to the influences of Euclid or other classical thinkers on the thinking and writing of the “Founding Fathers”?

What is also telling is that you don’t get the fact that a lot of Catholics and non-Catholics alike hope that this rotting and corrupt political institution can reform itself through the election of a new pope who can guide this “universal” church toward a Vatican III and cleanse itself of the spiritual terrorism that dominated the heirarchy up to Pope John XXIII and since the end of Vatican II.If the Catholic establishment does not elevate a progressive who can bring the institution out of the 4th Century and into the 21st, then it will surely die within the next 50 years.

I don’t think that the old terrorize, “delay and forget” strategy will work this time because finally Obama is usin’ “the people” and the grassroots organization that he originally stole from Howard Dean to force votes in both chambers. On issues that have overwhelming (60%+) support the only way the minority can kill legislation is to keep issues from comin’ to the floor. I think we are seein’ a new “bi-partisan” game plan to whip Democrats in the Senate and force Boehner to bring the bills to the floor to either pass with a Republican minority or lose the Speakership in 2014.

I’m a typical Norwegian and don’t make predictions for fear that the inevitable will hear it and reverse itself…but if I’m right, this political strategy will define the next 18 months on ALL the issues ObamaRahma pitched last night.

Well that settles it, CT, I’m goin ta DC ta visit “The Wall” on the way down ta Florida the end of February…I have hard-core avoided the place all these years…and since I was stationed in DC at Walter Reed in ’66 I have had no desire to see the place again. I’m so old my kids are startin ta sound like commie pinko radicals…the youngest is interviewin’ for doctoral programs in March, her older sister is subvertin’ her math department on behalf of kids who aren’t bein’ given what they need by administrators who get their understandin’ of education methods from the back of cereal boxes and their big brother is teachin’ high school kids that there is a language beyond textin’ and it includes some real bomb throwers like John Steinbeck, Shakespear and Aescules. Just thought I’d letcha know we’re goin’ to a graduation in Fargo this week…the youngest is gettin’ her Masters thesis published. It seems like jest yesterday she was turnin’ down Northwestern and gettin ready ta move ta fuckin’ Fargo and now we get to usher her back to “the world”. What is that old 101st sayin’: “When I die I’m goin to heaven because I’ve served my time in Fargo”.
