Christy, Thanks for introducing me (all those years ago) to FDL. Always enjoyed your writing and sharing. Thoughts are with you, and wishes for successful treatment.

otchmoson commented on the diary post Rant 4: The Awesome Power Of The Bully Pulpit by rosalind.
You’ve GOT to be psychic. You took the words right out of my mouth. (No . . . not really . . . you put form and substance to the muddled thoughts/feeling that somehow do NOT come out of my mouth with anything approaching clarity.)
Thanks for the rant. I needed that!

otchmoson commented on the diary post Breaking: Obama Justice Department serves Oregon officials with warrant seeking the identities of the state’s medical cannabis patients by acmerecords.
Do DOJ requests violate any of the HIPAA provisions? Seems, as in most cases, there are two standards. BigPharma, in trying to deny access to clinical trial data for researchers and analysts, claims they cannot disclose patients’ names (even in trials as insignificant as Brand X cough syrup vs. Brand Y cough syrup) because HIPAA [...]

We might even get so pissed off we physically threaten them and their property. Sadly, we somehow never get to “them”, but use proxies to illustrate our anger and frustration. I expect the frustration to continue festering . . . and eventually, those who fear the anger of the masses will, indeed, have something to fear; [...]

A BBC documentary was shared over on the Naked Capitalism site a couple of days ago. It puts real, human faces on poverty–faces that don’t quickly turn us “off” the victims as somehow ‘less’. The people in the documentary looked just like us . . . and acted just like us. The video runs to [...]

Agree . . . and if he further harms the broad middle class by reforming “entitlements” (earned benefits?), Hillary and the Democrat after her, and the one after that will fail. What the Republicans could not do for themselves is being accomplished by the current wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing.

otchmoson commented on the blog post Leaked Files Expose Offshore Tax Havens
Is this happening because the lessons learned from Al Capone is that since tax evasion lands one in jail, loopholes must be (and have been) created to legalize what was once criminal?

otchmoson commented on the diary post Over Easy – Mental Illness in America, or Part 5 by KrisAinTX.
CBL– Hubby and I have had a long-running battle with current (mis)treatment of diabetes. I’ve also had issues with depression. To find a retired medical professional actually experience the eye-opening that we’ve seen has been a positive reinforcement to keep-on keepin’-on. The doc writes with depth and insight unavailable to the layman . . . [...]

Anyone interested in learning more about “new psychiatry”, re-branding and expanding mental illness, etc. can learn a great deal at the blog site of a retired psychiatrist 1boringoldman.com. His discoveries about the ‘new path’ of psychiatry is, all at the same time, enlightening, frightening, entertaining and troublesome. If you have time, take a look. Most [...]

Besides understanding the “Wooster” problem (see comment 90), when I moved from Kansas to Rhode Island, I discovered myself in a foreign land. First job I had saw me (low man on totem pole) taking group coffee order. The order taking was scribbled “verbatim” and I watched in amazement at what was given to me [...]

I came to FDL out of curiosity, and stayed for the education and insight provided by a host of gifted contributors. Scarecrow was a must-read and an inspiration. He will be sorely missed. Condolences to his family.

otchmoson commented on the blog post NC: Bigoted restaurant owner slips condemning letter to lesbian couple — after they’ve dined and paid
LOST IN TRANSLATION: Many of these Christianists choose to emphasize the word abomination. I recently saw someone who explained that the word (I cannot remember the spelling nor pronunciation) in original language would be more akin to “taboo.” The difference: abomination implies hateful, despicable behavior (pedophilia, mass murder come to mind) while taboo is more aligned with wearing white shoes after Labor Day. There’s a big difference here, but one that is (intentionally) ignored by the haters.

Great post. I was having a self-conversation–much like your script–just the other day; mourning the passing of the milkman and the house-calling doctor. As a diabetic, I also resent the ‘re-packaging’ of decades’-old technology as the latest/greatest. We are told to test (our bG) and test often. The necessary strips cost $1 each (multiply by [...]

otchmoson commented on the blog post Morals and Selfishness
In it many liberals operate by cutthroat business principles that destroy the world five days a week and go home and give a few pennies to an industry of charity
Try substituting ‘christian’ for liberal and I might agree. Having witnessed first-hand the “good Christians” in my small, Southern town . . . I have now made it a policy (I know–I’m being judgmental) that when a business person, seeking my consumer dollar (insurer, repairman, etc.) assures me he is a “good Christian”, I walk away from whatever that his/her and whatever was being promoted. I figure if he/she has to TELL me what a good christian they are, he/she is indicating that I would never recognize him/her by behavior.
