There is no direct link between the two stories in this week’s headlines, but they share the fact that a year ago, most people had never heard of either, thanks to the media’s reluctance to cover the big picture. Even when ‘stories’ (sic) grow exponen-tially in prominence, this does not result in any significant background [...]

Marym, There is bound to be a lot of false reporting in a sitution as troubled as that of ISIS. I’m sorry that I dont’ hav time to go back over previous threads – the Kurds today require attention! As for ‘madrassas’ they are not ‘schools’ in the common sense of the word, because they [...]

The American Sunday talk shows alternate between discussing ISIS and the ebola epidemic, however none of those I caught mentioned the latest news about ISIS, which is that the Pakistani Taliban have pledged allegiance to it. During this past week much of the ISIS focus has been on the fear of jihadis returning to their [...]

Very interesting piece you linked you, that partly echoes what Dave Lindorff has been arguing on Opednews -but in a more balanced way that recognizes the role played by the NED.

Thanks for this info. Whatever Tamimi’s reasons for becoming a fellow at Pipes’ institute – or any other – his information is probably credible. I did not mean to promote Richard Pipes, of whom I have the lowest of opinions.

I must have been six or seven years old when I first heard the words ‘white lie’. My mother explained that it was ok to tell a lie to spare someone’s feelings. At present a gigantic white lie is being perpetrated on the American people. The government warns that the war against Islamic terrorism will [...]

I’m glad you reminded us about that. But if it happens, I don’t think war will be included in the subjects referenda (ums?) can address.

What a convenient word ‘terrorist’ has become! Until 9/11 the word was reserved for anarchist types in long black coats who set off bombs in public or assassinated heads of state. But when the World Trade Center was brought down the word became a convenient designation for any individual who showed any sign of opposition [...]

I wouldn’t put it that way. In most european countries, there have been far-right, mor or less openly fascist parties for as long as I can remember, somehow getting around the strictures against fascism after WWII. They have made consistent gains (meaning their percentages never going backward), and they ahve been joined by new fascist [...]

Thumbnail “Sweden’s victorious Social Democratic Party stressed its inclusive policy toward immigrants.” If I often write about fascism, it’s because it is the lynchpin of current events. Fascism comes in many stripes and colors. The old fascism, which revolved around anti-Semitism, is still represented by Ukraine’s Right Sektor and its wolfangel-wearing associated thugs. With the new [...]

I meant to imply that EVEN well educated professionals are joining ISIS, which seems difficult to fathom when you consider their bloodthirsty behaviors. But then, as many have pointed out, dead is dead, isn’t it?

There is no contradiction between being poor and wanting all women to wear the hijab. But you bring up an interesting point about young second generation immigrants being attracted to the values of the lands their parents came from.
