paiagirl commented on the diary post 6,000 Protest Monsanto Lobbyist Appointment by paiagirl.
I believe it has already helped. Senate President Donna Mercado Kim has said she will monitor the situation which is a huge step forward. I believe that she was given very bad advice by the Chair of Water and Land committee, Malama Solomon, who to date has shown no desire to do anything except deride [...]

paiagirl wrote a new diary post: 6,000 Protest Monsanto Lobbyist Appointment
On Thursday at 3pm, organizers will deliver a petition asking Hawai’i State Senate President Donna Mercado Kim to rescind her appointment of Monsanto Lobbyist, Alan Takemoto, to the Water Commission nominating committee. The appointment of an employee of the controversial Monsanto corporation angered organizers who point out that Monsanto has been turned down twice for [...]

paiagirl commented on the diary post Hawai’i ILWU Declares War on Environment at Dem Convention by paiagirl.
Maui has the Kahe’awa wind turbines that are working very well and supplying cheap energy to us. Problem is that the only firm power Maui Island has is HC&S’s coal-fired plant (that is a whole other can of worms) and diesel. (Natural gas is unavailable in Hawai’i) So our big need is storage which can [...]

paiagirl commented on the diary post Hawai’i ILWU Declares War on Environment at Dem Convention by paiagirl.
I think this bird issue is a distraction. The residents of Lana’i and Moloka’i have some very good reasons for opposing the two greenwashing Big Wind projects proposed for their islands. These reasons are: 1) Economics – the projects are out of scale and bestow no benefits on the island residents. However, it is quite [...]

paiagirl commented on the diary post Hawai’i ILWU Declares War on Environment at Dem Convention by paiagirl.
My understanding is that their first push was to get a resolution supporting the interisland cable (a favor to David Murdock in return for an unenforceable promise to keep the hotel workers employed) and their second was to eliminate as much of environmental protection (EIS) as possible (as a favor to A&B and other developer [...]

Another battle was over doing Environmental Impact Studies for large projects in Hawai’i especially those using taxpayer funds.
ILWU and their pave-over-Hawaii buddies advocated eradication of the EIS process.

Wind is an excellent source of ENERGY but not firm power. The problem with the Lana’i Big Wind project is not wind per se but the scale (covering 1/4th the island) and the economics (David Murdock will siphon off one-fourth $billion from ratepayers every year) and the engineering (it will supply nonfirm power at a [...]

I should explain that ILWU leads the construction unions on Maui in supporting all but one County Council members who belong to the Pave-Over-Maui contingent. ILWU advocates for including pesticide-tainted water in Maui’s water supply (in order to enable more construction.) ILWU advocates urbanizing ag land (in order to enable more construction) ILWU advocates turning [...]

This from a participant at the Hawai’i State Democratic Convention who attended the Environmental Resolutions Meeting: Twenty International Longshore Workers Union (ILWU) members, led by Donna Domingo, Jason Medeiros and Steven West, and their family and supporters, with many from Maui County, signed up to be on the State Democratic Convention’s Environment Committee in order [...] -
paiagirl commented on the diary post Hawai’i Senate Candidate’s Rightwing Credentials by paiagirl.
Yes the Chamber plans on spending half a million dollars on Lingle ads — that’s almost $2 per likely voter. (In 2010 277,000 votes cast out of 684,481 registered voters)

paiagirl wrote a new diary post: Hawai’i Senate Candidate’s Rightwing Credentials
Check out the conservative credentials of this candidate for U.S. Senate: – While in Congress, this candidate commended President Bush for proposing Social Security privatization , applauded President Bush’s management of Guantanamo , strenuously fought Democratic efforts to bring troops home from Iraq , voted for a budget resolution that called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood and public broadcasting , and voted for [...]

paiagirl wrote a new diary post: Oahu Politics Manipulating Maui’s Central District
For the past four Hawai’i legislative sessions there has been a rebellion against the good’ol boy, ethically challenged Calvin Say faction by a group fed up with Rep. Say’s leadership. An example of Say’s, shall we say, loose interpretation of ethics rules was the situation with supporter Rep Joe Souki. Souki took a paid job [...] -

Rep Kymberly Pine (Hawaii Republican State Legislator) is hopping mad at her ex-website designer. According to Eric Ryan, her website designer, she didn’t pay her bill so he…er….” redesigned” her website and the changed header on her email list. Next time she sent out an email blast to her supporters and the press the header read, “Kymberly [...]

Honolulu Civil beat which has heretofore been known as an even handed investigative blog has been inexplicably posting perplexing and contradictory stories. In the first one, Lingle, Flush With Cash And On Message , writer Chad Blair gushed over Lingle’s fundraising saying:
Well before midday, Lingle’s big haul was the top breaking news on most Hawaii news outlets, [...]

Hmm…I can’t let that go by. Yes Lingle and Case are both war hawks. Yes, they’ll both probably vote with the GOP but here’s the difference: Lingle will vote GOP 100% of the time. She nominated Sarah Palin, for heavens sake, and all other things aside, Lingle is a smart, educated woman and if she [...]
