About Iain M. Banks – just discovered his Scifi within the last 2 years. Enjoyed the Algebraist a lot. He’s my age +/- 3 months. Whew. What a shame.

It is already clear to me, through online postings from conservative friends and family, that the world view that Fox News and other right wing outlets foster, leads the viewers/consumers of that information to one conclusion: everyone else is crazy. If everything Fox (and friends) says is true, I would be crazy to vote against [...]

Confirming – I have a DSL router with up to 4 computers on my private net, all using the private subnet 192.168.1.*, and NAT does the translation so from the outside all seem to have the same IP address (the address of the DSL router). I’ll put my 30 years along side cmaukonen’s to confirm [...]

The table of 1999 to 2012 prices understates the percentage increase. The table lists the percent of the current price that is increased over the 1999 price. Actually, petrol has risen from 0.52 Euro to 1.70 Euro, so it is now 3.27 times the 1999 price, an increase of 227%. The same arithmetic applies to [...]

Question to those who rule out supporting John Edwards because of his extra-marital affair: Would you turn your back on family and friends for the same reason? Or would you love them for the good people they are, the good they do, the love they have for you? In my family, filled with exes, half-siblings, [...]

We speculate so often that for intelligence like ours to evolve, conditions like ours have to have occurred. Insight, or lack of imagination?

So many ways to avoid this death, only one way for it to happen – guy with the gun pulls the trigger. Otherwise, it is nothing more than a street fist fight – a few bruises, T’s claim against Z’s claim.

What do we do? Defend the gun owners, of course.

BP – If you are back later, this comment is just to add to your @1 – as I read GA’s piece, I was creating a response in my mind much like yours. Although I strongly believe we can and should have a government and economic system that takes care of the health, education, food [...]

Yes, I agree. We on the left have so few choices.

First, I’m happy for the LGBT community (and their supporters) – this is a step toward equal rights for everyone being part of the common political wisdom.

Second, I would prefer that there be fewer pro-marriage laws – tax breaks, legally binding financial laws, and more. Let each partnership agree to what makes sense for them legally and financially (that’s why we see more pre-nups – to break the age-old ideas of what is the “correct” marriage contract). Also, any tax break for married couples is a greater tax for singles. [Note: I'm okay with laws favoring child-rearing individuals and couples]

Third, though I’m older than this president (the first time for me), I feel that I’m much younger and more progressive at heart than he is. Do we really have to wait until 2016 to elect a progressive for president!?!

Thanks for the post (and commenter’s links), I’ve enjoyed remembering. I saw The Band live, first in 1974 in Seattle. Dylan (yes, Bob) was the headliner, but at $12 a ticket, I felt ripped off. Thanks to The Band, boy they made it worth it! By the way, I had to check online to be [...]

And it can be even longer than 2 weeks. According to Wikipedia:

Menstrual cycles are counted from the first day of menstrual bleeding, a point in time commonly termed last menstrual period (LMP). The time from LMP until ovulation is, on average, 14.6 days, but with substantial variation both between women and between cycles in any [...]

  • revisionist – mine @51 was a reply to you. And sorry about your aunt. I’m working hard to get full-time employment with benefits, but at my age, it is mostly 1099 contract work I’m finding. Until then, Mrs. PB gets the medical insurance – good thing, she’s accident prone!

  • My mother turned 65 – got Medicare, got a checkup, discovered lung cancer, too late to operate, died 16 months later. Yep, if you don’t have coverage, you don’t know what you are missing (can’t afford checkups when nothing seems wrong).

  • Yep, health insurance for us in our late 50′s is a yes/no proposition. Can I afford the monthly, or not? Even with $2K deductible (each, per year), healthy lifestyle, we’re talking almost $800 / month for me and Mrs. PB. Roughly $10K per year for the insurance, $4K deductible, no prescription, no vision, 50% dental. $14K per year – about what my wife makes as a substitute teacher (no benefits). So only one of us is currently covered. Maybe when Medicare kicks in, we’ll both be covered again. If it is still there.

  • I wanted to mention the Scalia observation – you beat me to it. Gack – I agree with Scalia, this is not a health care mandate, it is an insurance mandate. If the gov’t wanted to provide health care, instead of sell us insurance, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Yep, Liz, I didn’t like the subject either. I basically said now was not the time to deal with the deficit – zero interest rates, cheap gov’t bonds, high unemployment, now is the time to spend on infrastructure jobs. Oh, and fix the medical system by getting insurance companies out of the health insurance business.
