When the word “different” is used alone or in conjunction with the word “than”. The sentence, “That person is different” grates on my ears. Ditto for the sentence, “My needs are different than yours”. The word “different” should be used for explicit comparisons paired with the word “from”. So,a phrase such as,”My needs are different from yours” is proper.
