It’s easier for me to forgive the average Joe-six pack Tea Partier for supporting ‘clean natural gas’ than it is to forgive the average latte-sipping Democrat. The low-level Tea Partiers (as distinct from their masters) at least have an excuse – they have been fed an unending stream of lies about fossil fuels. The Democrats, [...]

No ‘what if’ about it! It sure looks that as long as there’s money to be made in fossil fuels, it will be made, despite desertification, ocean acidification, ocean level rise, species extinction, etc. etc. There’s little serious talk anywhere about changing the nature of industrial society or going beyond business as usual. We need [...]

We are faced with an updating of the medieval question – how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Our existential question is – how many climate activists does it take to change a light bulb, the energy source of the light bulb? I don’t know the answer other than MORE MORE [...]

Hello kitcarson. It doesn’t look like the links get posted. Here they are for H2OIL, Petropolis, and To The Last Drop. They look amazing – will be very interested in watching them. Thanks for posting!

It’s pretty pathetic that police in two states over the course of a week were so interested in my – or my political associates’ – whereabouts. What kind of threat to society am I? A 60 year old man who has never owned a gun, never been arrested, never had so much as a traffic [...]

ThumbnailSometimes you’re just living your life and things happen. You don’t think too much about them at the time.  But then a similar thing happens again, and again, and you begin to wonder if there’s a pattern to them. That’s what I experienced last week as a climate activist. Scene Number One:   Climate activists have come from [...]

Tough night, OB? Your comment brings to mind some song lyrics I’m sure you’ve heard before: “Young people speaking their mind/Getting so much resistance from behind.” The KXL protesters are ‘pathetic…fools’, eh? Or maybe ‘fucking retards’, would you say? So sorry that they’re not all as radicalized in their thinking as you, but it seems [...]

karenjj2 – Thanks for the kind words. It was quite an exhausting and exhilarating couple of days – even for those of us without a direct personal stake in the pipeline. For the Nebraska farmers and ranchers who have been dealing with Transcanada’s landmen for four years, all I can say is, thanks for your [...]

Here is the best coverage (ignore the headline; it is oddly out-of-sync with the story itself) of Thursday’s Keystone XL hearing in Grand Island, Nebraska. It was raucous, to say the least. Every antipipeline speaker had an inspiring perspective or quote. (We outnumbered the proponents probably 10 to 1). Nebraska Educational Television was there filming the [...]

I just did a little thought-experiment with the Brazilian example to see if their claims that a 4-person family could power their house with a 2 to 3 square meter panel made sense.

Our gluttonous-for-power American household is powered by 27 conventional solar panels, 5.6 kilowatts. I’m estimating they take up a 15′x40′ area – haven’t gone up on the roof this morning to measure…Brazilian families of 4 might use less power…but even so. That’s 600 square feet of solar panels for us. These new Brazilian panels supposedly can do the job in one-twentieth the space (10.7 sq. ft./sq. meter, 3 sq. meters = 32.1 sq. ft., 32/600 = .05). I thought the efficiency of our panels was around 15%. Don’t see how the Brazilian ones can be 20 times more efficient.

  • The NTSB report on Enbridge’s Marshall, Michigan leak into the Kalamazoo River is pretty interesting reading. A different line from the Pegasus line, but similar in age, so the ultimate report by NTSB on it will probably show the same types of corrosion and cracking.

Interesting that Blake Zeff would correlate pro-fracking with pro-Chained CPI. I hadn’t put the two together in quite that way, but it makes a lot of sense.

If we’re in the meme business, however, to describe these politicians as SPEC (Socially Progressive, Economically Conservative) leaves something to be desired. I don’t want to let these corporatists anywhere near the word ‘progressive.’ The word ‘liberal’ has already been destroyed, by the right-wing and by the liberals’ drift into Third-Wayism. So, I’d propose they be called ‘SLiCC’: Socially Liberal, Corporately Captured. The echo of Slick Willie, who was and is one of the leaders of this movement, is an extra bonus. More recently, SLiCC Senator Michael Bennet, formerly a money guy for Republican Kingpin Phil Anschutz, is another emerging face of the pro-fracking, all-of-the-above, corporate-status-quo Democrats.

If the Republicans could keep their knees from jerking long enough to call Obama’s bluff on Social Security and/or when Obama approves Keystone XL, the ensuing civil war will hopefully split the Democratic Party, giving space for something new to emerge.

Arkansasmatters.com has posted a five-minute aerial video of the ExxonMobil Pegasus pipeline break in Mayflower, Arkansas, northwest of Little Rock. The video doesn’t have any commentary, but you can clearly see the booms that have been deployed in the wetlands, and the water isn’t looking too good.  The epicenter of the spill, as one news source says, [...]
