“Makes me feel old.” Ditto. This woman wrote the soundtrack to my coming out years. Heaven knows indeed.

My last name is Poe, I know from Poe, this woman occupies her own Hilbert space of Poeness. Bless her heart.

pluky commented on the blog post Somebody Got Slut All Over My CPAC
Why does Erick…Erick assume that the condoms were bought for use with women? Judging by the Craiglist, Grindr, and Manhunt CPAC related traffic there’s more than one guy there down lower than Rick Perry’s poll numbers.

pluky commented on the blog post Whitney Houston, dead at 48 – a luminous, tragic legacy
The first thing I thought of when listening to “Rolling in the Deep” for the first time was “OMG! No autotune!” There are still real voices out there, but don’t count on the “star maker machinery behind the popular song” to find them for you.

But Ricky is male, and Michele is not. That counts for a lot with the Fundies.

pluky commented on the blog post McConnell to Boehner: Give Up and Pass the Stopgap
Last time I checked, Mr. McConnell was the Minority Leader in the Senate. So if there is any pissing going on between the two houses, it’s between their respective Republican caucuses. As to the Democrats, they’ve done their part to get this bill moving. At this point they’re obeying Napoleon, “when your enemy is destroying himself, shut up and get out of the way.”

My thought exactly. I’ve seen ‘full pathetic’ before. It usually correlates with ‘feed me now.’

pluky commented on the blog post A whiff of the desperate from Archbishop Timothy Dolan
The Knights of Columbus are not employees of the church. They most definitely could have a problem with statutory non-discrimination in public accomodation requirements.

What about RuPaul, Andre Leon Talley, George Wolfe, Bill T. Jones?

pluky commented on the blog post Early Morning Swim: Rick Perry, Former Presidential Candidate [VID]
a) This “brain fart” is but the latest in a string of incidents beginning with his undergraduate (non)performance that underscore Gov. Perry’s intellectual inadequacy.
b) The Presidency is not a job for morons (see GWB).

pluky commented on the blog post It’s Always Been a Class War
The people that wrote the Constitution were not the same people that wrote the Declaration of Independence. And the purpose of the Constitution was to (hopefully) establish a workable system of government, not posit a rationale for political self-determination. The Declaration stands alone, with no need of amendment nor emendment. The Constitution, on the other hand, from its formation to the present day, is an interpretive work-in-progress. If I might close with a premptive rebuttal to those who might presume an application of ‘original intent’ to such interpretation; what faction’s ‘original intent’ in the Contitution’s drafting should take precedence? The document was founded in compromise, not clarity.

pluky commented on the blog post Mike Signorile scorches N.C. Sen James Forrester on air – destroys ‘rationale’ for the anti-gay amendment
Could this guy really be so ignorant of the players in this policy area that he didn’t know who Michaelangelo Signorile is?

pluky commented on the blog post Senator Scott Brown on the Transgender Rights Bill: “We’ve already done it here in Massachusetts”
As a MA resident, watching Sen. Brown try to tack back to the center as fast as he can is dryly amusing. Methinks somebody’s internal polling on Prof. Warren’s candidacy is giving him serious adgita.

pluky commented on the blog post Bible-beating Kentucky lawmaker wants to pass a bill to protect anti-gay bullies
The TaNaKh has elements of:
– classic and paleo hebrew http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Hebrew
– AramaicIt didn’t acheive canonical form until the Middle Ages in the Mazoretic text http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazoretic_text.
However the Septuagint translation into Koine Greek, for centuries the only version accessible to Gentiles, dates to the second century BCE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septuagint.
The New Testament was written in Koine Greek (of varying degrees of sophistication), a smattering of Aramaic. However “Common Sayings Source” material was also Aramaic in the oral tradition, prior to inscription.
Modern bible translations rely on a variety of source materials in many languages: e.g. Hebrew (paleo, classical, and Mazoretic), Aramaic, Syriac, Greek (Koine and Byzantine, and Coptic.
The idea these days is not to come up with a “definitive” text, but rather a one that best expresses in the current idiom the likely sense of a passage. One tries to careful to note alternatives in source material, and interpretive ambiguities.
