I remember back in Akron OH in 1965 the big controversy was the city’s decision to fluoridate the water supply, which drew the usual letters to the editors from the cranks warning of the dangers of communist subversion, etc.

The big date for the fluoridation to begin was set for some date, let’s say August first, and right after that more letters began to appear of people claiming to suffer all sorts of severs side effects…

Imagine the surprise when the city announced that they hadn’t been able to actually get enough fluoride to begin on the targetted date and therefore had to postpone fluoridation for several months!

That year we also had a controversy about the ‘bloomers’ gym uniform worn in those days by girls in (girls-only) Phys Ed classes… I can’t remember now the actual problem with these unflattering garments, but the wingnuts deemed them to be some sort of moral hazard…
