Interesting. True, but maybe not a Chicken-Little level issue. I’m older than you; I was married in 1964 after a hitch in the US Army. But I’m with you on the style of parenting back when. I’m just not sure it’s all that bad. My granddaughters here in the PNW pretty much run loose. As [...]

Oh well! One down, one to go. I think my point was that “free market” is and always was a myth. I can’t easily prove it, but in my recollection the term was invented or at least only became popular during the Great Communist Scare of the fifties. The PTB decided to attack communism by [...]

“The free market” is not a religion, it’s a scam. But then one could say the same of all organized religion, so maybe I’ll grant your point. The only true free market that comes to mind is actors and free-agent professional ball players. The reason they get those outrageous deals is because they’re worth it, [...]

Oh, OK. I used to have more respect for the BBB until now. See PriscillaQOB @ #18 above. That’s more like what I’ve heard.

Business model? You mean racket model. To say that the donations racket is a business is too kind.

PS: Where did the four percent figure come from? Hell, the Salvation Army doesn’t do that good, and they’re head and shoulders above all the others in limiting administrative costs.

Certainly a vast increase in profits for the Mafia.

Now that’s a good point. “Arms” in those days did not include F-16s, Stinger SAMs, or atomic bombs, or even semi-automatic rifles with 30 round replaceable box magazines. We may need to take another look at this issue. And yet, erik @ #8, you might be surprised what havoc a few million armed citizens could [...]

Wouldn’t the “founders”, who were quite the masters of the language, have said. “the right of members of the state militias to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed;” if that’s what they meant? No they would not. That statement would be the height of idiocy, redundant (nothing in the Constitution prohibits the states [...]

Maybe the type of corporations who buy and sell congressmen have their own diplomatic corps and they don’t want the State Dept. to succeed/interfere. I’m thinking of Arabian-American Oil Company. If they threw a party for ibn Saud, the last damned thing they’d want to show up would be a savvy US Ambassador with a retinue of bright Arabic speaking assistants.

  • “And if he is aware of anyone pursuing children, then perhaps Mr. Hampton should alert his local authorities rather than attack an innocent segment of society.”

    Amen!

However it seems to have become a typical behavior. Faux News’ Bill O’Reilly, has several times accused someone of TREASON, a capital crime, without having first alerted the FBI. We may assume that he was using this charge for dramatic effect with no intent of actually leveling an accusation, since he could not support one anyway. pitifully it seems to get some traction in certain circles.

The problem is very simple: The woods are full of ignorant people who can be influenced by this sort of insupportable accusation. At least, anymore, we seldom hear the refrain, “They couldn’t say it on the air if it weren’t true.” We’re moving in the right direction. I think.

We were newly married and perhaps a little flagrant; our friend Lucy was a Music Teacher and she was a devotee of Simon & Garfunkle, especially this piece. We liked rock and roll. One day one of us listened to the words. OMG! It’s more than one should have to bear. Unless you should happen [...]

From your previous record of perspicacious posts, I’m going to assume that the above is your idea of ironic humor.

:…unlike those cuddly Free Market death panelists in tasteful bespoke suits who used to decide whether I died or not…”

My nephew was lying in the hospital being prepped for paracentesis (for his ascites due to his liver failure) and this cute little nurse-aide, obviously noting my advanced age, says, “I know this neurosurgeon who was at a conference in Houston the other day; and they told him that anyone over seventy who needs brain surgery shall, henceforth, be sent home to die.”

I said, “And who exactly is this person or persons who presumes to tell a bunch of American neurosurgeons what they may or may not do?”

She said, “The Obamacare People.” After a short interval wherein I attempted to ascertain from her what might constitute an “Obamacare Person”, I finally declared, “That’s Bull Shit!”

She evacuated immediately. My nephew, of course, said, “Goddammit, Uncle George, don’t piss of the staff when they’re about to punch a hole in my gut!” I had no comeback for that. The whole story is at snopes.com

She was lying. There can be no alternative. She did not know any such neurosurgeon. These people have a peculiar philosophy, it runs like this: It is permissible to lie, cheat or steal as long as the goal is to further the cause. Is that consistent with normal democratic governance? I’m afraid not.
