Congressman John Garamendi wrote a new diary post: Red Herring Bill Threatens Public Lands, Public Health & Jobs
Today in America, 14 million people are out of work through no fault of their own, dragging our economy ever closer to another recession . The first priority of Congress should be to create jobs. The American Jobs Act, which would add nearly two million jobs to the economy , is being summarily dismissed by the Republican-controlled House of [...]

Congressman John Garamendi wrote a new diary post: Millions of Acres of Land You Inherited are at Risk
Maybe you weren’t born with a silver spoon in your mouth, but like every American, you carry a deed to 635 million acres of public lands. That’s right. Even if you don’t own a house or the latest computer on the market, you own Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and [...] -
Congressman John Garamendi commented on the diary post First Vote on Afghanistan in Post-Bin Laden World this Week by Congressman John Garamendi.
I initially introduced two amendments on this issue, one to strike Section 1034 and one to terminate after three years. Both were withdrawn before the Rules Committee selected amendments to go to the floor. Frankly, the latter was introduced because it was unclear to me how much spine Congress had to fight back against the [...]

Congressman John Garamendi commented on the diary post First Vote on Afghanistan in Post-Bin Laden World this Week by Congressman John Garamendi.
I do not believe we can ignore terrorist cells actively plotting attacks on America. One plotter almost killed dozens in Times Square fairly recently. I agree we are overextended. I agree our nation building in Afghanistan costs us too much blood and treasure. I do not believe we can turn on backs on extremism and [...]

Congressman John Garamendi commented on the diary post First Vote on Afghanistan in Post-Bin Laden World this Week by Congressman John Garamendi.
The change in cockpit doors was an important improvement in public safety after 9/11. I also agree we need to be especially careful to avoid civilian casualties. But that is not an argument to let terrorists plot further attacks with impunity.

Congressman John Garamendi wrote a new diary post: Electric Current Events: Middle East Revolutions and the Need to Revolutionize American Clean Energy
Pro-democratic movements in the Middle East are in the midst of their rendezvous with destiny, but America’s destiny can no longer be linked with the fates of dictators, military juntas, and theocratic regimes. We must develop energy independence; we must Make It In America. America must develop a national energy plan that prioritizes the need [...]

Congressman John Garamendi wrote a new diary post: A Town Hall in Your Pocket, A Smartphone with a Front Row Seat
In the days of Washington and Jefferson, Members of Congress had a difficult time reaching the people they represented. A horse and buggy ride from Washington, DC to most states in the union was quite the journey, and most Americans were lucky to have access to their Congressperson one month a year. From the railroad to [...]
