One more interesting thing about our Scarecrow, he was a consummate Jane Austin fan, a romantic at heart. Don’t know how many people knew that.

I’ve been in touch with John’s “landlady” the friend and, really, family he had in Boston. She is planning to plant a rosebush at the house in his memory and gather his local friends. This is a heads up to the FDL family that we will get the word out when we have a date [...]

I met John in the Spring of 2006 when Christy called on us all to go visit our senators when they were home on break. John, Selise, Andy Foland and I met for the first time in the lobby of Ted Kennedy’s office. We went up and had an impromptu conversation with an intern. We [...]

Doing my own sermon on this tomorrow. Using a lot of excerpts from his because why re-write something that is already brilliant. Do go to the Stanford link Kurt Sperry posted @9 and read or listen to the whole thing. The last almost 4 minutes of it was played at his funeral since his words [...]

That link also has the audio to the entire sermon which ran 39+minutes. Really fine. The speech that got him in the most trouble was the one he did at the Riverside Church exactly one year befor he was murdered. There is so much that he had to say that is totally true today it is [...]

Very late to the thread—I don’t often have time these days to even get to the threads though I lurk when I can. FDL has been a tight community from the beginning and seeing so many familiar names is heartwarming. Losing dear friends, some of whose real names we don’t even know, is truly sad. [...]

So sad to lose another beloved member of the family. For such a public forum, FDL was first and foremost a community of brave souls fighting the good fight. SD was one of those fighters.

We come from many walks of life and many experiences to combine our heads and hearts to make this a better country and planet. Richard certainly contributed mightily to that effort.

Blessings to OmAli for being there, and to all of the members of the community who held his name and his being in the light.

I remember Teddy K. and believe he must be rolling in his grave. Then again I don’t think he’d do well to be alive and watch all of this transpire in front of him.

The only liberal lion left is Bernie Sanders and he refuses to be called a democrat for good reason. Sad that he has no power and no one listens to him.

    We are totally f*cked.

My plan exactly. Getting a lot of grief from some friends and Mr. Rev. But can’t cast vote for pres. Who does not believe in accountability or the rule of law. Can’t vote for dem senator who votes against choice and birth control. Will vote for guy trying to unseat Gerlach, though it’s an uphill [...]

This is so painful to watch and I know what they are trying to talk about. Joe public has already changed the channel and moved on.

The next debates are going to have a minuscule audience.

    F*ing deficit fetish.

God forbid anyone including the moderator should ever pay attention to Krugman and all the other economists who have been right all along.

I wish it was funny. Once upon a time I could think/believe that it was ok to watch these things for the humor.

The whole thing is tragic, as is the direction the country and world is going.

Why am I even watching this anyway? It’s all so discouraging.

    good for him.

These days hiding anything seems to be more perilous. Big Brother is watching everything we do.

I hope we never have to go back to the days of the CCS but I fear it will happen.

several of my now retired colleagues were part of this network. They too have stories of seeing and counseling women and hiding the files they kept—they did keep files—in garages, in basements, in places other than their offices where they could not easily be found. A clandestine operation not too unlike the underground railroad.
