I discovered that I had tastes that far outstripped my budget, so I started building my own.

Truth be told, most guitar players use so much signal processing that I can’t really hear a difference most of the time. It’s only when you hear the guitar plugged straight into the amp that I can really hear a difference. Although, to be fair, I don’t have the best ear, and people whom I trust assure me there’s all the tactile difference in the world. I can’t say-I’ve never owned a really expensive guitar.

Most of the big guitar companies, like Fender and Gibson, own their own low-cost competition, so the primary source of parts for the high-dollar fakes are the copies that Fender and Gibson themselves manufacture, that have these small differences engineered in. Not as much Gibson, because the necks are glued-in and thus can’t be easily swapped, but there are a lot of fake “US-made Fender American Standard Stratocaster”s with parts from Indonesia and Mexico, because of the interchangeability.

Hi eCAHN! Long time-good to see you!
The Fender Stratocaster is one of the two truly iconic rock electric guitars, along with the Gibson Les Paul. There are a great many fakes, especially low-cost copies that are made to look like US-made instruments. There are a number of ways to spot fakes, especially in small differences in bolt patterns, hardware, and so forth. I noticed tonight, when comparing a US Strat to an Indonesian-made copy, that the mounting pegs on the tuner are in a different place; so to spot the fake, pull a tuner; if there is another set of mounting-peg holes underneath, it’s a fake.

Well, thank you. Late seminar-US Radicalism. And I just learned a new way to spot a fake American Stratocaster. How are you?

    Evenin’, Tuttle-

Paul Gilbert is an amazing guitar player. Have you ever heard his cover of ELP’s “Karn Evil 9“?

“Number of the Beast” isn’t Heinlein’s best by any stretch, but it does discuss an idea akin to Hawking’s. It suffers from his attempt to create a Grand Unified mythos.

It’s typical Henlein; as always, intellectual audacity and visionary ideas combined with almost comic-book superhero characters.

I too wish Oliver was on a more available channel. I can’t stand that a lot of the really great series and comedy writing is being done on premium channels.

    ‘afternoon, Jane-

Hawking: “imaginary time” was a concept that had not yet been explored in science fiction because simply authors don’t understand it.”

It’s funny-I think there’s a legitimate case for disputing Hawking. Robert Heinlein wrote a book called “The Number of the Beast,” where the protagonists could navigate at angles to the time vector, and move freely through the multiverse. His imaginary time, timelines running at angles to perceived time, sounds a bit like Heinlein, at least to my ear. Hawking may still technically be right, though, since Heinlein’s book appeared, I think, about the same time as Hawking’s. So it couldn’t have been based on Hawking’s work, even though it does describe a somewhat-similar effect.

Much better, thanks. I had the flu for two weeks, but am finally up and about again.

Catching up on my guitar a little bit. I’m trying to learn the solo from “Stairway to Heaven” note-for-note; for a mostly-bass player, it’s a handful.

So, I checked my Facebook a little bit ago, and it says that I am now friends with Jeff Beck. :)

    Therefore, in my friend’s honor:
