What a wonderful tribute! Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Scarecrow’s writing taught me a lot. His passing is such a loss to the progressive community.

How did I miss that David’s leaving? Where are you going?
David, I join the others in thanking you for your well written, enlightening posts. I hope you are continuing in this field. Best of luck to you. -

Slightly OT – every time yesterday and today that I called the White House regarding this issue and these austerity measures in general, the line (both lines) is busy. Anyone getting through?

I voted third party as well but never even saw any third party results for my state. Did you?

If we wait and hope, we are doomed. If we rise up and demand an end to the electoral colelge and to a two party system, we might begin to get traction for change.

I’d be willing to contribute to that billboard – but only if it included “except to Wall Street and the 1%”

28% won’t work – I don’t think 35% works – where is that study that gave the percentage the wealthy need to be paying to help the economy and cut the deficit down?

Engler, the Michigan governor who left our entire infrastructure crumbling, is one of the early ALEC people. He is a fat cat sleeze.

RoyalOak commented on the blog post 450,000 Seniors Would Lose Coverage Under Medicare Eligibility Age Increase
Our deficit is huge due to unfunded wars, tax cuts for the wealthy and the near-decimation of the economy by greedy banks and Wall Street. Yet the poor and middle class are the ones they want to punish for this by raising eligibility age for medicare? How the hell is that supposed to help fix the deficit? And do they realize the money taken to pay for insurance by people 65-66 will be money taken OUT of the general economy (no retail purchases)?
I’m in Michigan and still reeling from yesterday but every single day it’s something new to screw the poor and middle class and I don’t see how anyone could NOT expect a revolution from all this…. -

In a UAW plant this morning…almost everyone is extremely angry but, worse, they feel out of control of their own lives. Like we are living under a dictator. The majority of Michiganders did not want a RTW law. The plant is right at the point of exploding, there is so much anger and frustration there. [...]

They’re putting money on this bill so it cannot be voted out.
I will tell you I hope no Republican gets elected in Michigan next time. -

Bill just passed first step, moments ago. I don’t see how – am I misreading this? It appears a bill must be printed and sit in both houses for 5 days before it can pass – maybe this means pass as a law versus pass from one chamber to the next -
http://www.michigan.gov/som/0,4669,7-192-29701_29704-2836–,00.htmlBut I’m ready to go crazy if this isn’t some stupid political ploy and actually becomes law. They plan on attaching money to it so we cannot ever vote it out.

RoyalOak commented on the blog post Democrats Angling to Ignore Base in Fiscal Slope Deal
Yes, the deficit is from unfunded wars via Bush/Cheney War Machine but it is ALSO from the recession. If you put people back to work (ie, the opposite of austerity) then they will pay taxes and voila! The deficit will lessen. Are these elected officials actually so stupid that they don’t realize this? Or is this merely a great opportunity for them to rip apart the social saftey net?
We need campaign finance reform. We need true education reform (and not to privatize it so our tax dollars go right to a company’s profit line). We need LOTS of bills and laws passed and this “grand bargain” is pretty close to the bottom of the list of what needs to be done. -

Dyslexia is fascinating. My husband is not only dyslexic, he also has left/right dyslexia.(I constantly have to say “no, the OTHER left!”) They never discovered it in school, just held him back. But we recently were discovered by his father’s family and there are dyslexics in the family. He felt vindicated in a way. Einstein, [...]

We were heavily involved in search and rescue (using dogs) and still have many friends involved. With Katrina, they still were pulling in SAR dog teams to find the dead over 8 months (please note the word “over”) after the storm. It’s kept quiet.

Kris, I am excited to see your ongoing links and discussion on education, a favorite topic of mine (next to politics and dogs and food). We need to go back to teaching kids how to think, not what to think.
