SaltinWound commented on the diary post A Sitting NY Supreme Court Judge With Cancer Makes A Plea For Medical Marijuana by TheCallUp.
Marijuana should be legal. Arguing in favor of marijuana as a serious medical intervention though could ultimately hurt the cause of legalization, in my opinion. It does have some limited medical uses. In the case of this judge, it has clearly been a help. But would marijuana being narrowly offered for pancreatic cancer and other [...]

SaltinWound commented on the diary post Will Wisconsin’s Old Folks Save Scott Walker? by Mike Males.
Social Security is not welfare but there is a younger generation that pays into the program at the same rate but is not assured of benefits.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Santorum questions women in frontline military roles because ‘other types of emotions are involved’ (updated)
I have never understood people looking for fairness in terms of gender in the military. It does not exist. For me, that starts with boys having to register for the draft at eighteen. Girls do not. If you want fairness, girls should have the right to fight but they should also have the responsibility.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Nothing About the Insurance Market Makes the Individual Mandate Legally Unique
I get why the auto insurance parallel is slightly off. What about legally mandated vaccinations? These are a series of laws against inactivity which have been supported by the courts, although there are religious exemptions.

SaltinWound commented on the diary post Where are the Usury laws? by Liz Berry.
In many cases, the people paying these rates are desperate and have no choices. If charging high interest became illegal, I have to imagine loan sharks would fill the void.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Raising Minimum Wage Significantly Would Boost Economy
San Francisco has the highest minimum wage in the country, with an unemployment rate slightly higher than the national average, which makes me wonder about this. But I am guessing they are doing better than the rest of California, which has a lower minimum wage. But my main point is that it depends how high you raise it. Clearly, there is a number at which a higher minimum wage would hurt employment. The study of economics should involve coming up with the optimal number at which a minimum wage helps the economy without hurting employment. Any sense of what the number is?

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Unemployment System at Stake in Conference Committee Negotiations
They are redefining unemployment insurance to make it last longer than premiums covered, longer than anyone with insurance expected it to go on. I do not see that as the equivalent of wages that have already been earned.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Unemployment System at Stake in Conference Committee Negotiations
The post claimed that no employer in America forces employees to take a drug test. I want unemployment to be extended and do not believe these untrue statements help the cause.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Unemployment System at Stake in Conference Committee Negotiations
David, you have brought this up before as a program people pay for. But there is no way the premiums allow for limitless payouts or the premiums would have to be much higher. So the premiums need to be much higher or the federal government needs to step in and give more money to the unemployed, which is what has been happening. Also, many jobs require drug tests, of course.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post House Republicans Face Mass Criticism for Payroll Tax/UI Rejection
First of all, I am pro welfare. Second, I do not know how you can claim that unemployment after 99 weeks is paid for out of people’s own paychecks. If we want the insurance to cover over 99 weeks, the amount taken out of paychecks would have to be much much higher. At this point, it is welfare, which we can argue for on its own merits.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Privatization and Oligarchy
There have always been great private colleges. I am not sure why the only examples here are of the barber and electrolysis variety. Later, this post uses the phrase for profit. Are private and for profit synonymous for purposes of this post?

SaltinWound commented on the diary post Chancellor Katehi Claims Her Police Force Disobeyed Her; So Why Is She Still Chancellor? by Teddy Partridge.
The police chief had to go, for claiming the pepper sprayers were clearing an exit path. This was not true, no matter what orders she was under. The chancellor was an apologist after the fact as well, before she realized she had a public relations disaster on her hands. If the police were not following [...]

SaltinWound commented on the diary post Not Just Seniors, Most People Don’t Like OWS or Tea Party by fairleft.
Money changers usually implies Jewish and is widely considered to be a slur. When coupled with the phrase apt for the Christian end of things, I do not know what else to think. Maybe it was just an unfortunate choice of words.

SaltinWound commented on the diary post American Seniors Strongly Prefer Tea Party to “Occupy” by Mike Males.
Whenever there is a proposal to reduce Social Security in the future, they are always quick to reassure seniors that it will not affect their benefits. This seems to satisfy many seniors. When AARP sends out trial balloons about gutting Social Security, it is the same. Some like to think AARP is going against their [...]

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Late Night FDL: Hating Twilight = Hating Women
It did draw me in. But the title did not strike me as ironic, even after reading the article. It seemed more like a disconnect. You are entitled to think that your comprehension skills are better and that your superior reading led you to the correct interpretation.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Late Night FDL: Hating Twilight = Hating Women
Clarification please. Twilight is about the abuse of women, but the title of the post suggests that if a man hates Twilight, he hates women? It seems from the content of the post that if a man loves Twilight, he hates women. Or is the thesis that all men hate women, no matter how they feel about Twilight, in which case you do not need Twilight as part of the equation at all?

SaltinWound commented on the diary post Occupy GA: Lord of the Flies by Janet Rhodes.
Was John Doe dismissive of consensus based decision making or taking advantage of it? When he first showed up, he was a vocal minority. I would think the consensus process could be used to advantage by someone like that, based on other diaries I have been reading.

SaltinWound commented on the blog post Live Blog for #Occupy Movement: Aftermath of a Massive Day of Action
I was responding to the implication that shutting down Wall Street was not a goal of protesters but something the police said. I thought it was a goal. These responses seem to indicate that, for some, it was. I think that is a good thing.
