Thank you! We really hope the film touches a nerve and gets people emotionally connected enough so that they want to do something.

We are working together on some new projects! Danielle and I are developing a fiction piece together that is inspired by a group of amazing political women in the early 1980s in Dallas, TX. We are also pursuing another exciting documentary, but can’t discuss it quite yet. You guys will be the first to hear about it when we can.

Erik is at a less than stellar work program that is not geared towards people on the spectrum. Quran is in three different programs. He recently started having seizures but his parents are working hard to maintain his schedule. Unfortunately, Robert has effectively disappeared. Last we heard his Aunt gave him up and he is now living with his mom full time. The school and our crew have not been able to reach anyone in his family. He has, sadly, fallen off the cliff.

That is actually something Senator Menendez included in the Age In Act. He calls them “transition navigators” which could be code for “bureaucracy coach”

They have something called Access LInk in NJ. But it is not specifically set up for people with disabilities which can raise issues in terms of scheduling and sometimes the safety of people with disabilities.

We filmed from Jan 2011 to June 2012, with a pick up shoot in Sept 2012. We started editing a rough cut in January of 2012. We started the fine cut in May of 2012 and finished that by September 2012. The final version of the film was done in November. All in all it was about 2 years.

Also, a big deal breaker for these families is transportation. You may get your kid into a program or a job situation but if you are a working parent or do not own a car, getting them to point A to pint B can be an impossibility.

And, in Erik’s and other people’s cases, a job coach would not be necessary every day, just once in a while, checking in, reminding him of the job duties. He just had to learn the “program”, so to speak. It would not be such a heavy financial burden on the state… or companies. Giving companies an incentive is a great idea – not just to hire people on the spectrum but to keep them on.

A job coach in this specific case is someone who guides someone with a disability until they are able to do the job on their own. Burger King can’t supply that person, the state has to. The reason Erik had a job coach in the first place, was because of the school. He was still in the system, so Mino’s teacher’s assistant could act as his job coach.

I am going to copy and paste this so Mino can see it. She is not unlike many incredible teachers we found in Newark.

Exactly..but I am sure if you look at how much it costs for us to neglect the quality of life of adult on the spectrum and allow them to be institutionalized or thrown in jail, the numbers should become less obvious. As a society we should put that money into the programs that work and make them accessible for all families.

You are right. That is exactly why we made this film. As Mino often says, they all have special gifts and something to offer. They deserve a quality of life like anybody else.

Senator Menendez recently introduced The Age In Act. It is a bill that would put more money into research for what programs are out there that are working and into training people to help families and young people on the autism spectrum transition from school into the “real” world.

Well…I agree with you:) Scott Badesch from the Autism Society was on a panel with us and discussed the billions we spend renovating runways so people do not have to wait for their planes to take off. That money could support many programs or set up transportation for some people who will end up wasting away at home with out it.
