Republican Douthat also omits the Republican opposition to effective rescue/recovery efforts in the US Senate. They stymied an effective response to this crisis, and that, coupled with a flaccid response from Dems, and a refusal from the administration to make them pay a price, did a lot to shape public opinion.
To with – government can’t come riding to the rescue when some people in government are hobbling the horses.
