Am I insulting and rude to (especially) women? First time I ever heard that. I’m known for not rising to the bait. Sorry if you have taken offense. I simply was saying the American position on secession from our union was made perfectly clear in the 1860s. As to Spain. When I write about Spain, I write [...]

A Basque friend of mine (he still is) once asked me what Abraham Lincoln would have done about the Basque independence movement and Eta… I told him that I thought Lincoln would probably burn down Bilbao. Our Civil War was not about slavery it was about secession, breaking the Union and the “national independence” of the [...]

I don’t do “security dossiers”, I put together collections of news and opinion from open source English language publications for Spanish corporate directors. My role is that of “taster”, I select from mass of material what I think they shouldn’t miss. As to Catalan “politics”, the ruling parties there have been creaming off a minimum [...]

There are real historical, linguistic and cultural differences between Cataluña and the rest of Spanish regions as there are such differences between all the other regions too, however I think the Catalonian independence movement is absurd, fruit of some tremendously corrupt local politicians “wrapping themselves in the flag”.

Regular readers of my blog posts may wonder why I am posting so infrequently these days. There are several reasons, but the most important one, is that I am rethinking what I want to write about… I am trying to find an underlying pattern in all of this and write about that as I notice that the [...]

First it was the 2007 financial crisis. Then it became the 2008 financial crisis. Next it was the downturn of 2008-2009. Finally, in mid-2009, it was dubbed the “Great Recession.” And, with the business cycle’s shift onto an upward trajectory in late 2009, the world breathed a collective a sigh of relief. We would not, it [...]

I am certainly not recommending that we all convert to Islam. What I do recommend is that we cease intervening in the internal affairs of that religion in any way and certainly cease issuing fatwas like the recent one of Tony Blair’s telling Muslims how to practice their religion. The more we lecture, intervene, sanction, invade, the [...]

Douglas McCain Mr. McCain’s death provides new insight for the authorities as they try to learn more about ISIS and identify the Americans who have joined a group (…) And it is a sign that ISIS, at least in this case, is willing to use Americans on the battlefield in the Middle East rather than sending [...]

The US has said the shelling of a UN shelter in Gaza is “totally unacceptable and totally indefensible”. In its strongest criticism yet of Israel’s offensive in the Palestinian territory, the US – Israel’s closest ally – also said the civilian casualties were “too high”. It urged Israel to do more to protect civilian life. BBC [...]

Actually they have no legal right to occupy anything they took in the Six-Day war… So they are not “defending their borders”.

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that Hamas was still there.

The Israelis are building the Palestinian’s national myth… how dumb can you get.

Dov Lior, the rabbi of the settlement of Kiryat Arba, has issued a religious ruling permitting the total destruction of Gaza if Israel’s military leaders deem it necessary. Lior is considered one of the more extreme rabbis on the religious right. In his ruling, he wrote (…) “The defense minister may even order the destruction of [...]

It’s not just partisan politics, either. It should bother religious people that politicians pay a lot of attention when conservative church leaders speak out against contraception and gay rights but hardly any when religious voices suggest that these children deserve empathy and care. There are those in our clergy who could usefully consider whether they speak [...]

Thumbnail In almost any question, no matter how complex, there is an axis, hinge, fulcrum, upon and around which the entire question revolves. Discovering that point is often produced after concentrated immersion in the problem in all its facets, but the discovery itself is experienced as an intuitive flash…. what Zen Buddhists call ” satori“. In their discipline [...]

The right of return would mean that Israel would no longer be a Jewish state, they are never going to sign that. The USA will have to cough up some billions to compensate the non-returners.

Reading Pfaff in 2001 and he seems bang on (as usual) way back then… USA has wasted trillions and endless lives in Afghanistan since then and will soon hand it back to the Taliban.
