David Seaton commented on the diary post BREAKING: Extremely large and damaging tornado hits Moore Oklahoma by cmaukonen.
What I can’t understand is why people in tornado areas live in these crackerbox, balloon frame houses instead of ones made of bricks and stone. When Katrina hit Biloxi Mississippi the brick houses all were left standing and the wooden ones disappeared, I imagine that Sandy was about the same story. Certainly in a tornado [...]

David Seaton wrote a new diary post: My European Union Rant
Now it is the European Union itself that is in danger, mainly but not entirely because of the economic crisis inherited from Wall Street abuses. (…) A new Europe-wide report by correspondents of the Paris newspaper Le Figaro reveals mounting disillusionment with the European Union itself among the voters of its member states. (…) Britain has [...]

David Seaton commented on the diary post The military sexual abuse scandal by David Seaton.
I think the USA has been engrossed in militarism for much, much too long and this has corrupted the military first and the entire society in the end. Also the strain of ten years of endless war is cracking the entire military institution, physically, mentally and spiritually too.

You are welcome Wendy. :^)

David Seaton wrote a new diary post: The military sexual abuse scandal
It would seem to me that the current, quite justified uproar about sexual violence in the US armed forces sheds a very bright light on the cognitive dissonance produced by America’s view of itself as a democratic, enlightened and inclusive society that serves as a model for the world to emulate, which contrasts with the reality [...] -

This is the sort of action that should be encouraged!
Some Retailers Rethink Role in Bangladesh – NYT Ever since a building with garment factories collapsed in Bangladesh last week, killing more than 400 people, Western apparel companies with ties to the country have scrambled to address public concerns about working conditions there. Benetton repeatedly revised [...]

David Seaton wrote a new diary post: The First of May… mayday, mayday
“Don’t waste any time in mourning. Organize…”
The first of May, commemorating bloody labor unrest in Chicago , is celebrated all over the world as the universal holiday of labor… except in the USA of course. The same USA where “red”, the eternally universal color of the world’s left, is now, unlike the days of Joseph McCarthy , the [...]

Because we all share the context… Everybody, everywhere knows about America, but American in general are ignorant of the rest of the world.

I think Spain will stay peaceful because Spaniards know better than almost anyone, anywhere, the price of political violence.

David Seaton commented on the diary post Spaniards Occupy Congress: #25A Madrid by CTuttle.
The United States affects everything everywhere and Spain doesn’t… I was born and raised in the USA of an American family settled there since the 17th century and I know perfectly well why I don’t want to live there.

David Seaton commented on the diary post Dear Left, Enjoy Your Pot and Gay Marriage Because That’s All You’re Getting by Kurt Sperry.
Gee, a lot of people thought so at the time :^) Seriously, we will only have arrived at a post-racial America, when the word that black people address each other with carries absolutely no pejorative stigma or hatred on the lips of others and the NAACP becomes the NAAN. At that time we will all [...]

Let me get this straight Juliana… you are telling me what is happening in Madrid?
-
David Seaton commented on the diary post Spaniards Occupy Congress: #25A Madrid by CTuttle.
Revolutions are often violent but for violence to be revolutionary, certain conditions must exist and the violence, if there is any, is only the final push. None of these conditions exist in Spain right now… lots is happening, but not revolutionary stuff. Example: ” escraches“… this is a form of protest invented in Argentina, which consists [...]

Generally speaking anarchists are a useless bunch, “romantic” and ineffectual. In Spain in the 30s many of them converted easily into fascists (and vice versa).

The Indignados or “15-M” movement are strictly non-violent. That is central to the movement.

I live in Madrid and the word in the street is that nobody went to the demonstration because it was planned to be violent and that is not the public mood.
