I think the facebook page is a fake, put up after the shootings today. It doesn’t line up with the YouTube account at all, in terms of being coherent. I also noticed there weren’t any pictures of the guy at all. Looks like rat-fuckery to me.

Yes, of course I get that cross-hair imagery and Palin’s political tactics are rotten to the core and are creating a climate of violence.

What I’m saying is that using a lunatic’s actions, when we don’t know yet what his real background is, to hold up as evidence for that position is a bad move. What do you do when the next Squeaky Fromme comes along? If you don’t think she was influenced by the left (and I don’t) then you can’t claim that Loughner was influenced by the right. At least, not while remaining intellectually honest.

    mozaffar on twitter:

Nidal Hassan: we linked him to Awlaki. Jared Loughner: we linked him to Palin. Same agenda-driven nonsense. Tell me about the *wounded.*

The Fort Hood shootings are what I thought of right away this morning. And back then, despite the shooter’s islamic name, we held back on jumping to assumptions; and when it came out that he had jihadist interests, we insisted that people didn’t paint all U.S. muslims with the same brush. And Hassan was far less cuckoo than Loughner.

Scott Roeder, on the other hand, had deep ties and a long history with Operation Rescue and so forth. I think that many other people should be convicted for Dr. Tiller’s death alongside Roeder.

Look, I completely agree that eliminationist political rhetoric is horribly dangerous and should stop. But trying to hang today’s whacko around the neck of Palin, when there’s no evidence anywhere that he was at all affected by the rhetoric we’re against, only makes us look like hypocrites.

TBogg, I almost always get a laugh when I come to your place, but I wish you’d waited a few hours before making a link between Palin and the shooter.

If this is correct and that’s actually the shooter’s YouTube account, then it’s obvious that he would have shot whoever his congressperson was, even if Ms. Giffords had been defeated last year. The guy’s a complete nutcase.
