silversiren commented on the blog post It couldn’t be more depressing
As a lifelong NJ resident, save for seven years when I was able to escape this crumbling state, I beg to differ. Christie is hated by an awful lot of New Jerseyeans not just public employees He’s a bully and would never be able to work with other people.
He refused the money for the ARC tunnel which would alleviate much of the traffic congestion on the roads in the NJ/NY commute. There were at least three breakdowns last week on the transit lines. Gee, if only that work on the tunnel had been started. Just think how many jobs that would create. If you’re able to read today’s Times OpEd by Ross Douthat about the great one, take a look at the comments. They’re very revealing.
As for the pension funds, you have to go all the way back to Christie Whitman to see how the funds were raided to give tax cuts to her rich contributors. NJ is a crumbling state from the inside out. We don’t need this fat bastard in NJ or in Washington.
As a final note, I would give him credit for defending his appointee to the court when the guy’s Muslim religion came into play. Other than that, he’s a loser.

silversiren commented on the blog post Obama’s 2008 Hope Morphs Into 2012 Slash-and-Burn
I have been thinking this for a long time. The GOP could not ask for a better or more willing occupier of the Oval Office. Either way we’re doomed.

This piece regarding the Supreme Court is in today’s NYT Magazine. The most interesting part to me is the last paragraph, The Bench is not Deep. According to this, there are 80 vacant seats on the Federal bench. Simply out of fear of conflict BHO has not put out any names to fill these seats.
Helleva job, Barry.

silversiren commented on the blog post Pull Up a Chair
After we retired, my husband and I made extensive trips to Italy (our heritage) and also a trip to Turkey. The picture above brought back memories. As to Knut’s comment above regarding Sicily and the food, I have to agree. Never have I had such delicious seafood. Fishermen come in and the catch is sold and it’s on your table that evening. As he says, to die for.
Our travel plan was to make two trips a year–one international, one domestic. As a result, we also saw some beautiful areas of the Southwest and northern California. We always traveled on our own except for the trip to Turkey when we went on a tour. A delightful experience and a very beautiful country.
Unfortunately, we’re not able to travel these days due to my husband’s health. We are thankful every day that we took advantage of the time we had and got to see some of the things we dreamed about all our lives.

Just reading this post now and it is a keeper. Thanks, Happy. With regard to your comment that a President McCain would never have been able to put SS on the table. So true. Michael Hudson was on Democracy Now the other day saying basically the same thing. He called this debt ceiling fiasco a [...]

As a resident of NJ, I’m not very fond of Chris Christie, but I have to give him points on this.

silversiren commented on the blog post Biden’s Admission on the 14th Amendment Actually a BFD
David, your work is always outstanding, and I know we all appreciate it. But, really, can you take what Biden supposedly said seriously? With this president’s history since taking office, I’m afraid he can’t even use the men’s room without asking for permission from the repugs. As for invoking the 14th, not a chance in hell. Not in his DNA.

You nailed it. This guy’s averse to heavy lifting. But at least now he can go to the Vineyard and rest for a while. Being President is hard and he needs a well deserved rest. /snark

silversiren commented on the diary post Harry Belafonte: “Such a void in moral truth” by Teddy Partridge.
Powerful post, davidl. Your second paragraph sums it up perfectly. I recently read a profile of Dr. Cornel West in the NYTimes Magazine. He said he would advise Obama to look at the picture of Dr. King which hangs in the Oval Office and contemplate the sacrifices he and his followers made in the name [...]

silversiren commented on the blog post Is Standard and Poor’s Manipulating US Debt Rating to Escape Liability for the Mortgage Crisis?
Markopolis is scheduled to appear on the Bill Maher show tonight. While I’m of the opinion that Maher is a political lightweight, maybe Harry will shed some light on the hot breath coming out of Standard & Poor’s.
Why should anyone put any credence in what they or Moody’s have to say? We all know where their allegiance is.

I’m 70 and couldn’t agree more.
If only Teddy Kennedy was still with us. He’d be railing from the Senate about the injustice of this whole shit sandwich.

silversiren commented on the blog post The Return of Barack Obama and the Art of Negotiation
Thank you, Jane, for this great piece.
I’m of the opinion that Obama is hopeless and hapless. He clearly is in over his head and is completely ass backwards on everything. I do believe the Republicans had his number from Day 1. I still recall his first SOTU address where most of the GOP clowns were texting or Twittering–whatever it’s called–while he was speaking. This told me they didn’t take him seriously.
I say if the country goes into default, the government should stop writing the checks to the congress critters first. Also take away their subsidized gym, haircuts, etc. By the way, is is true that California has instituted such a law regarding their paychecks being held up first? Sounds good to me.

silversiren commented on the blog post It’s Not Just About the Democratic Party — It’s About Democracy
I just finished reading Nixonland by Rick Perlstein. Reading that I’m of the opinion the democratic party died long before 2000.
Unless and until there is a viable third party and a real contender to challenge these bastards in Washington, things will get progressively worse. Of course that also presumes the ‘muricans will pay attention and learn about the issues and how this all will relate to them in some way or another. I won’t hold my breath.
