sixgill commented on the blog post A Future World Where Drones Engage in Wholesale Surveillance & Dominate US Airspace
I completely believe that, while drones do have a national security purpose (though there are issues obviously), drones categorically should not be used in the domestic US for anything vaguely related to surveillance, national security, etc., *in particular* by any private entity.

I have grown tired of the Jesus Bunker and its dizzied inhabitants. Evangelical Christianity is almost a state-within-a-state in the US.

sixgill commented on the blog post Armed Teacher Training Program launches in 15 states; ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws = increase in homicides
I am not anti gun, nor do I shriek in alarm at the prospect of armed people. I don’t think armed teachers is a good thing though. For one thing, many people are probably just not cut out for a gun fight. Gun fight are kind of a big deal. Second, most teachers have no black ground at all in the military or police or even sport hunting. Most teachers are women who speciakize in working with minors and teaching reading or math. Attempting to turn teachers into an armed force individually capable of responding to surprise attack by a homicidal maniac is probably a pretty stupid idea.
Finally, adding more guns to schools merely increases the rate at whichbshots will be fired in schools.
I am not antigun, but I think these armed teacher programs are really stupid.

Brooks is a hack. I really wish the Times would quit publishing his drivel.

sixgill commented on the blog post Petraeus Affair Shows Dominant Power of Government Surveillance State
Basically, the affair should never have become public. It is not for the FBI to report to the public the details of peoples’ consensual private sex lives. This entire episode is about the surveillance state and is also about the hysterical bent towards sexual moralizing. The fact that a newspaper would even publish a report on the extra-marital affair shows that high-ranking editors and reporters at newspapers have no decency either.

I do like the idea. The trouble is that the debt has to be bought off. That requires money.

What an incredible job to have, you are handed millions for being fired for incompetence.

I still don’t know how Maddow stays on the air – TV is supposed to be about stupid-sounding people saying stupid things to stupid people.

sixgill commented on the blog post François Hollande Goes Medieval on Eric Schmidt as French Tax Authorities File $1.3 Billion Claim Against Google
It’s kind of sad that EU government entities have to take on the task of sane regulation of US-chartered corporations, because the US government is so wholly corrupt and owned by corporations that it cannot do this itself.

sixgill commented on the blog post How You Know When There Have Been Too Many Campaign Ads
Try shutting off the TV. TV has never been good but at this point it is utterly irredeemable. Political ads? The best ones are the ones you never saw.

sixgill commented on the blog post Clint Eastwood’s Daughter: Not Voting for Mitt
I think Clint is probably a Republican in Name Only, and otherwise is just a geriatric cinema artist. He really has hitched his wagon (I was tryibg to avoid a Western metaphor, truly) to the wrong group.

I am truly sorry that Dean Baker sees himself in a position where he must read David Brooks.

Bogg: you can’t possibly expect the Republicans to behave like they actually have any ethics. To have ethics, you would have to have a morality that transcends the simple desire for power.

sixgill commented on the blog post Rep. Carolyn Maloney: Google Android Sex App “Appalling Beyond Belief”
The sex industry will make use of the internet for as long as there is an internet. The sex industry helped drive the growth of the commercial internet originally. If internet access becomes mobile via smart devices, then the sex industry will use that.
It would probably be smarter to work with operators in the sex industry itself to police underaged and non-consensual prostitution, then to try to somehow stuff away and repress away the industry itself. It’s a demand-driven industry that probably predates even agriculture.

sixgill commented on the diary post Who Guards the Guards? by Bill Fisher.
In te case of a privately run prison also probably the names of the board directors, executive managers, and major shareholders should be publicized in national news along with their photos in relation to the incodent.

sixgill commented on the diary post Who Guards the Guards? by Bill Fisher.
I read about this when the news emerged. I think anytime this happens there should be automatic criminal charges filed against the people directly overseeing the well-being of someone who died like this, criminal negligence, manslaughter, etc, and I think that the organization operating the prison should a) forfeit summarily its legal charter to function [...]
