  • skolion commented on the diary post Why Joe Biden Will Probably Win the Vice Presidential Debate by inoljt.

The idea that Biden is obviously going to win the debate is laughable. Sure, Biden’s a better debater than Obama. So is my cat. But, until Dems learn how to deal with GOP lies effectively, they will lose debates. People have to read between the lines when these debate “zingers” are delivered. In order for [...]

This anti-Islamic movie that is causing so much anxiety, outrage, and violence, well, I pray that the press digs around into its origins.  This has all of the markings of a Carl Rove move, or James O’Keefe.  If Rove, the remnants of the Breitbart gang, or some other (Koch-ish) GOP group is behind this I am certain that [...]

  • Newt’s campaign from now on in three lines:

    1. This isn’t about me, it is about taking back America. (Read: don’t bother talking about my past, lack of ethics, or insanity because I am nothing but an empty vessel into which you can pour your hope.)

    2. You’re freaked the hell out about how crappy things are, and I, Newt Gingrich, will take advantage of your fear by promising you to return to a mythical 1950s (reality, globalization, political corruption, and evironmental destruction are to be ignored).

    3. The elite media and the Dems are profoundly un-American, and only by voting for me can you stop the destruction of our country by people , like Obama, who “don’t like America”. They are dangerous, and I can save you from the danger. (And, of yes, be afraid— see #2!)

Look, I’ve said it before, unless the Dems get some ass-kickers, we are looking at President Gingrich. Do you really think there is no difference between Obama and Newt? Fear works, and Newt is scaring the hell out of people so they could vote against their interests, and the interests of America.

Has anybody noticed that crazy works? I the dems don’t get some serious ass-kickers, we’re looking at President Romney or President Gingrich. And then, God help us all. I know that there are many FDLers who think the Dems are corrupt and just as bad as the GOP, but seriously, don’t corrupt politicians want to get elected? Dang, the country is freaked the hell out right now and looking for somebody to kick some ass. The GOP is doing all of the ass kicking (with two exceptions: Occupy and Wisconsin). Seriously, how can we get some ass kickers with a progressive message and media presence? Jane is one of few able to do this.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is a wealthy man.  He is the son of a wealthy man.  His sons will be wealthy men.  Their sons will be wealthy men.   These are statements of reality, not statements driven by envy.  Al Capone was a wealthy man.  Saddam Hussein was a wealthy man.  The men of the House [...]

  • Dylan,

Thanks for educating us (me!) about the important contrast between extractionary and value-creating activities. I see your efforts being reflected, unexpectedly, in the criticism that Mitt is currently facing regarding Bain’s activity. Are you hopeful that the 2012 campaign might allow the MSM and the country in general to have a real discussion about the varieties of capitalist activity— productive versus extractionary?

But, in terms of election rhetoric, they are great sound bites. I hate to say it, but I doubt the Dems are ready to counter any of these sound bites.

In a post a couple of weeks ago I wondered if there might be a way for the 99% to cooperate better by bringing  together progressives and Tea Partiers (and the huge block of people with no name…to match their voiceless status).  Below are some thoughts on the matter. Tax code . Simplifying the tax code is a very popular [...]

Fair enough. And, yes, I will absolutely admit that the left (or people associated with the left, if that makes a difference) has its own clowns. I’ll ever admit a 1:1 ratio of people with unreasonable positions on both sides (though the nature of their unreasonableness varies, of course). So, after all of this, do [...]

Evidence? Hmm, Keith Olberman said so! Just kidding. Visual evidence here: http://theredphoenixapl.org/2011/07/13/analysis-of-the-tea-party-movement/ A University study here: http://depts.washington.edu/uwiser/racepolitics.html Lenny McAllister (a tea party supporter) admitting to the WA-PO that the TP racist elements (which he, admirably, spoke out against). Now, regarding the ignorance of the 25%, if you look at polling data you’ll see that people [...]

OK, let’s look at it this way. ~27% of the US population (300,000,000 ish) has favorable views of the TP. Let’s take 25% of that 27%, and with some rounding, that leaves about 20 million asshats in the country. This is what I consider the core of the worst version of the Tea Party. And, [...]

Sure, failure to mock should not count as “support”. But, it is a step in the right direction. Regarding the Vegas and Phoenix situations, this is an example of something that we (i.e. progressives) should have seen coming, and prepared for. It really is a no-brainer for dedicated GOP operatives (Koch-ites, etc.) to just show [...]

OK. I see your point. I would like to note two things, however. First, when a persistent theme in the Tea Party was some version of “Keep the government out of my Medicare” then, yes, I do think there is some education is in order. It is not a matter of being “enlightened” but rather [...]

I’ll happily admit that a TP rally may have been very different than a Town Hall at which Tea Partiers showed up (along with with the “general public”). I suspect that a TP rally would attract the rabid 25% I described above. But, I think there are people who are sympathetic with the TP but [...]

I saw this post today and decided to write a short reply.  I think that a strategically sound thing for Progressives to do right now is, rather than ridicule Righties confused/embarrassed by what a disaster their party has become, to point out to them that Progressive populism is actually better aligned with their interests than Tea Party folks.  People were so [...]

According to Founding lore, upon the completion of the constitutional convention, a woman asked a very old Ben Franklin, “Dr. Franklin, what (form of government) have you given us?”  To this Franklin is to have replied, “A Republic, Ma’am, if you can keep it.” Have we?  Has the Republic been kept?  Anybody who has read [...]
