Smedley Butler commented on the diary post UPDATED w/FDL Webinar Report! Dear Michael Moore: Put Up or Shut Up by Anthony Noel.
“Maher’s name for this party-within-a-party? The Donner Party. Their platform? ‘We will literally eat each other before we give an inch.’”
It’s not about compromise, it’s about leadership. What the Tea Party Corporatist proposes, the Democratic Party corporatist disposes. This is not leadership or compromise it’s feckless evasion of responsibility.

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post Water Cooler – Intelligence Committee Says “No, You Can’t Know How We Read the FISA Laws” by Bill Egnor.
Thank You for asking Feettothefire the underlying concept can be a little tricky to fully understand but important to keep in mind so you’re able to recognize the opportunity to apply the principals. Here are a couple of places you can go tohave a little fun and get a visual representation of the way tiny [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post Water Cooler – Intellegence Commitee Says “No, You Can’t Know How We Read the FISA Laws” by Bill Egnor.
“There are a lot of troubling things going on in our nation and especially our government. So many in fact that it is hard to keep track of them all, and frankly, to be as upset as we should be about them.” This is the problem and nibbles at the edges of the great underlying [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post To Whom Do We Now Turn? by David Swanson.
One of the biggest problems with partisan ship at this time is “Party identification” Not folks who identify with a particular party but the many who can’t identify the parties because the labels have little to do with what’s really inside the box. We really don’t have two parties but one Corporate conglomerate party that [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post Without a Vision the People Perish by Arthur Fullerton.
What we need is hope for the future not the bumper sticker hope for change that’s a pale imitation of the true heartfelt optimism that empowers individuals to shake off the lethargy that despair and cynicism induce. A good first step is learning to recognize the propaganda that’s permeated our lives to such a degree [...]

Smedley Butler wrote a new diary post: The Rainmaker
I’d like to relate one of “Gramps” many colorful tales. During the Oklahoma dust bowl after 8 long years of drought and the crippling economic and social devastation it wrought on some small towns the folks would turn to any grifter that came along promising some relief. They turned to them because they HOPED for CHANGE. [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post Prison Ships, Ghost Prisoners, and Obama’s Interrogation Program by Jeff Kaye.
I’m more questioning the potential abuse within the system than the veracity of Reprieve’s research.
With little to no transparency and minimal oversight what keeps them from just throwing an innocent prisoner who may be considered an “embarrassment” or “possible future risk” over the side?

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post Dems hit new low: DSCC begs Koch Brothers for cash and get denied by jest.
“we would garner an invitation to join you and other Democratic leaders at a retreat in Kiawah Island this September.” What do you offer these guys as a perk? I suppose tax breaks aren’t that appealing if you pay little to no tax anyway. Maybe they should have offered a getaway bonus that would hold [...]

Friends or family could know someone was missing or taken but still have no idea where they were, how to communicate with them or any knowledge of their fate.

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post Prison Ships, Ghost Prisoners, and Obama’s Interrogation Program by Jeff Kaye.
“It was back in June 2008 that the British legal charity Reprieve issued a report alleging “the United States may have used as many as 17 ships as floating prisons.” Moreover, the group claimed “about 26,000 people are being held by the U.S. in secret prisons — a figure that includes land-based detention centers.” The [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post The Unreasonable Power of Believing in Hope by Smedley Butler .
I hear you about the “service economy” becoming the “servant economy” and had the same misgivings I believe the best chance for progressive political change is a broad based progressive faction within the Democratic party analogous to the Tea Party in some ways. An identifiable national would provide the funding and support needed to advance [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post Report FDL Site Problems Here by Jane Hamsher.
I’m new here, having visited fro time to time but never signing up or posting. On a positive note I’m a little relieved to find the “quirks” are site issues moving towards resolution and not in my system :) BearCountry suggested a report an issue button, I looked for one here shortly after registering and [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post New Justice Department Threatens Raids on Pot Shops by michael hayne.
I don’t much buy into the notion that things will gt better after the 2012 election and believe that parasitic corporations will not easily relinquish their cash cows or allow profit reducing freedom to get a foot in the door if possible. It may take public outcry revolving around an actual raid to bring this [...]

“By controlling what we see on television, the corporatists have not just made us political simpletons.”
We’ve been called “The most over entertained and least informed people on the planet.”

Smedley Butler wrote a new diary post: The Unreasonable Power of Believing in Hope
In the face of great adversity on a number of social economic and humanitarian fronts why does the American public seem to be in a lethargic stupor politically compared to their contemporaries worldwide? People from other countries seem to have no problem taking to the streets or engaging in “Movement Politics” to bring about positive change. [...]

Smedley Butler commented on the diary post How to Build a Million Dollar Mousetrap that Steals Cheese by Smedley Butler .
A good example.
I think much of the problem is that party labels don’t accurately describe a particular set of ideals or goals. We really have one large “Corporate” party and a small cadre of progressives and moderates operating within the Democratic party. In a nutshell 1.5 corporatist VS 0.5 Progressive and moderate parties

It seems that many folks, myself included see the repeal of Glass-Steagall and it’s replacement with “Goldman-Stealall” as a milestone on the road to misery.
