solidmeltsintoair commented on the blog post Thankful for the Walmart Strikers This Holiday
Federal legislation is needed to prohibit major retailers from being open on Thanksgiving Day. Would be tough to write the legislation, as some retailers selling vital goods (e.g., medicine) need flexibility to stay open. Might include all stores over a certain # of square feet.
Retailers & their lobbyists would likely fight this legislation ferociously; unions would get opportunity to show that they really care about low-wage workers.

Thanks for the great post, David. I’ll be leading a discussion of Wilfred Owen’s poetry–including “Dulce et Decorum Est”–on Sunday at my church, which has a plaque next to its front door honoring the men from the congregation who died in the “Great War.”

I know that I’m late to the comments, but thank you! Wendy for superb reporting on the stuff going on in Rio that the MSM (the few of them that are paying any attention at all to Rio)never cover.
I linked to the “Peoples March” video at my green blog (and say TY again!):

solidmeltsintoair commented on the diary post The biggest evils of Capitalism. by cmaukonen.
You are correct that pillaging scarce–and usually non-renewable–resources is probably capitalism’s cardinal sin.
The answer, as many others have pointed out, is to discourage this pillage by taxing producers for their negative externalities. The US currently has it back-asswards by subsidizing (thereby encouraging) the most ecologically destructive activities.

There’s method behind this madness–
I sniff a campaign (coming from as far away as Rome) to whip up anti-Obama sentiment among Roman Catholics for the election season.
