solidmeltsintoair commented on the diary post Saturday Art: Influential Authors: George Plimpton by dakine01.
Plimpton lived two blocks away from me for years; our dogs played together sometimes. Most times I saw him in the neighborhood, he looked haggard, unshaven and seemed to be recovering from the previous night’s binge.
Mad Magazine still got it best in the early 60s, IMO:
Tigers, Tigers burning bright
In the ball parks of the night
Your pitching’s fair, your field adroit,
So why no pennants for Detroit?
You blaze around the big league parks
With bats that fairly give off sparks,
But when they total up the score…
You’ve lost again to Baltimore.
The Cleveland Indians go to work.
They beat you good; so does New York.
When Boston adds a mortal blow,
All you can shout’s “Look out below!”
Tigers, Tigers, burning bright
In the ball parks of the night.
Someday the fans will get their fill
And ship the team to Louisville.

Tar sands crude should be left in the ground, period. And it would be if it were priced fairly (accounting for its externalities).

Interesting too that these docs. were released just before the holidays, when they probably figured few people would be paying attention.

Why are The Who playing so much longer than everybody else? This is turning into a Who concert.
Federal legislation is needed to prohibit major retailers from being open on Thanksgiving Day. Would be tough to write the legislation, as some retailers selling vital goods (e.g., medicine) need flexibility to stay open. Might include all stores over a certain # of square feet.
Retailers & their lobbyists would likely fight this legislation ferociously; unions would get opportunity to show that they really care about low-wage workers.
Thanks for the great post, David. I’ll be leading a discussion of Wilfred Owen’s poetry–including “Dulce et Decorum Est”–on Sunday at my church, which has a plaque next to its front door honoring the men from the congregation who died in the “Great War.”
