I think in America we assume our legal rights are protected. Many of us feel an obligation to give back to society in return for those wonderful rights. A societal duty needn’t be mandated by law. It’s a moral obligation that a human being feels in order to participate in the benefits of society. My grandmother wasn’t drafted. She volunteered to serve in World War I. Same with all soldiers, male and female now.
