• Thumbnail Exactly what constitutes a photograph is one of the big discussions that permeates photography. On one end of the scale there are the purists who claim that nothing should be done to a photograph after the exposure and then there are those who believe that any amount of alteration after the fact is fair game. [...]

The park is going to be cool – the stage is much bigger than it looks in the photo and it really fits in well with the surrounding landscape . I was skeptical at first but am now a convert.

Don’t give up! seriously. I see photographs that have that effect on me every day but they are the ones that make me keep on keeping on. Nat Geo is the prime gig but tough, the editing is brutal. Seasoned photographers have seen what they regard as their best work rejected. I am a walker [...]

Good Point – not sure what they will make of this city, only has a population of 30,000 or so but is very mixed place, traditional Street, box stores, university, bit of everything and politically very mixed.

Thumbnail Being creatures of habit, Meg (the sensible one) and myself do the weekly shop at the same time, on the same day, going to the same shops and driving the same route almost every time. The photographs in this post are all of a small section of the route. It is a section that has [...]

It’s good to get away from traditional subject matter and seeing in terms of line, tone and pattern really helps that process. Everything and anything is a potentially good photograph.

  • Thumbnail Last weekend I wrote a bit about photographing flowers , more specifically about some very different approaches with some examples. Many of the examples were black and white, the logic being that black and white is one of several strategies that reduces visual clutter. Photography is all about reduction and abstraction, a three dimensional scene is the [...]

Don’t buy it. Far to many sweeping generalizations and assumptions based on very little. How do you know that I despise a certain group of people because I despise NASCAR? Are all doctors really evil control freaks who are plotting the takeover of the modern world along with their engineer buddies? Do first world, i.e. [...]

Superb Essay and nothing to take issue with. What you describe is a hegemony and that is about where we are at. The process was intentional and consisted of a concerted effort, driven by the likes of PNAC, Heritage et al through Fox News that deliberately chipped away at the UN, Geneva Conventions and all [...]

Pleasure, it was fun to put together. I use both a P and S and a DSLR and I find that I use them about equally and it is not so much a quality thing as they both have strengths and weaknesses – The DSLR is the answer for anything that involves off camera lighting [...]

Thanks – believe me it is no hardship. I spend most of my time in front of a computer screen so time out with the camera is something to be savored. One thing about photography is that it forces me to really look at things and that is the part I like the most.

I like the top one especially. The side on flower in shade works really well. Almost all the photos in this post are from a patio I built outside my office door a few years back. The exceptions are the dandelion at the top is from the grass verge outside of my house. The indistinct [...]

  • Obama is probably the most cynical president that this country has produced, not the most evil just the most cynical. He believes in nothing other than winning the next election. He really does not care one way or the other about anything else.

I expected a post about Jerry Springer – which probably doesn’t say anything good about me.

Ha! love the anecdote about your husband and it doesn’t surprise me one bit as I come across it a lot, nearly always from males. For some reason men tend to think of beauty in terms of accuracy, i.e. render something perfectly and it will automatically be aesthetically pleasing. To my mind accuracy is a choice [...]

I didn’t know about Philidelphia’s Murals. The one in the pic is spectacular. I toured Chicago’s ones about six years ago and had a great time in the different neighborhoods and got to speak to some of the artists.

Thanks – I do both. My wife made her living as a landscape designer and I’ve gained respect for both hardscaping and plants through watching and listening to her – and for the first time in my life I can name plants beyond terms like ‘green thing in the corner’ and ‘the one with purple [...]
