Don’t forget that Rick Wagoner also presided over General Motors Acceptance Corp (GMAC, now Ally), as it diversified from auto loans into home mortages and HELOCs at just the wrong time. This is something Ford Motor Credit NEVER did. GM would have been far better off if they hadn’t done that, although they still probably would not have survived.
For that alone, he deserved to go.
