Susan Dirgham commented on the blog post WikiLeaks Cables Show US Strategy for Regime Change in Syria as Protesters are Massacred
Hi Kevin, this is a very interesting analysis, especially when there is so little in the way of in-depth investigation into Syria in our media. I was working in Syria when Hariri was assassinated, and i was aware of the pressures on the government and people at that time. People in Syria are generally very politically aware and astute; that was my impression. As for what is happening now, I was in Damascus over Easter and became very aware of the killings of police and especially soldiers then. The targeting of them by armed gunmen has therefore been going on for some months, but it is getting even more serious and brutal. Last week I saw a video which shows the bodies of soldiers being thrown into the river that runs by Hama, and the men heaving them from a truck were yelling out, “God is great”. These attacks on the security forces and the implications of them have to be mentioned for a more global understanding of events in Syria. The role of Salafists there needs to be studied. Another thing to mention are the calls by extreme imams mostly outside the country to overthrow the government – they are nasty, and any Syrian who watches satellite TV would be aware of them. Cheers, Susan
