Here in the central part of California, we have synchronuous springs:

Short-term climate and weather systems can have a strong influence on mountain snowmelt, sometimes overwhelming the effects of elevation and aspect. Although most years exhibit a spring onset that starts first
at lowest and moves to highest elevations, in spring 2002, flow in a variety of streams within the Tuolumne and Merced River basins of the southern Sierra Nevada all rose synchronously on 29 March. Flow in streams draining small high-altitude glacial subcatchments rose at the same time as that draining much larger basins gauged at lower altitudes, and streams from north- and south-facing cirques rose and fell together. Historical analysis demonstrates that 2002 was one among only 8 yr with such synchronous flow onsets during the past 87 yr, recognized by having simultaneous onsets of snowmelt at over 70% of snow pillow sites, having discharge in over 70% of monitored streams increase simultaneously, and having temperatures increase over 128C within a 5-day period. Synchronous springs tend to begin with a low pressure trough over California during late winter, followed by the onset of a strong ridge and unusually warm temperatures. Synchronous springs are characterized by warmer than average winters and cooler than average March temperatures in California. In the most elevation dependent, nonsynchronous years, periods of little or no storm activity, with warmer than average March temperatures, precede the onset of spring snowmelt, allowing elevation and aspect to influence snowmelt as spring arrives gradually.

Here’s a little holiday episode from the West Wing for your enjoyment, Tbogg.

“Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned.”

This gives rise to an argument: whether it is better to be loved than feared, or the opposite. The answer is that one would like to be both, but since it is difficult to combine the two it is much safer to be feared than loved, if one of the two has to make way. For generally speaking, one can say the following about men: they are ungrateful, inconsistent, feigners and dissimulators, avoiders of danger, eager for gain, and whilst it profits them they are all yours. They will offer you their blood, their property, their life and their offspring when your need for them is remote. But when your needs are pressing, they turn away. The prince who depends entirely on their words perishes when he finds he has not taken any other precautions. This is because friendships purchased with money and not by greatness and nobility of spirit are paid for, but not collected, and when you need them they cannot be used. Men are less worried about harming somebody who makes himself loved than someone who makes himself feared, for love is held by a chain of obligation which, since men are bad, is broken at every opportunity for personal gain. Fear, on the other hand, is maintained by a dread of punishment which will never desert you.

  • I’d say that O’Keefe acted like a horny teenager with his failed plan to ‘entrap’ a CNN reporter, and you certainly agree with me that he’s wildly overpaid.

I defer to your masculine opinions on this tender and delicate subject.

    (raises hand)
If Ross was drinking, that in itself might constitute an explanation, because his throat was dry from vodka, and we know from Shakespeare that ethanol has a double wammy on the male nervous system:

Lechery, sir, it provokes, and unprovokes; it provokes
the desire but takes away the performance.

It could be that he thought the vodka would give him some Dutch courage, but if he wasn’t an experienced drinker he could’ve had too much to drink, so that he could’ve unwittingly put little Ross to sleep and rationalized the results as the fault of his almost-partner.

  • Like James O’Keefe?

  • He should write his memoirs: “Traveling on the Hershey Byway, or, My life as a Ghirardelli Square.”

Tbogg: “The situation is totally unacceptable.”

MSM: “Well gentelmen, I guess that just about wraps it up.”

Firedoglake: “Where are the other tax returns?”

Intelligence: “I thought we settled this. They are somewhere very safe.”

    Tbogg: “From who?”

Firedoglake: “Those tax returns are a source of unspeakable power and they have to be researched.”

MSM: “And it will be. I assure you, Firedoglake, Tbogg. We have top men working on it right now.”

    Tbogg: “Who?”

    MSM: “Top… Men…”

I think we should call this political diva “La Incredible“:

A well-heeled socialite whose charity concerts were a cult sensation from 1912 until her death in 1944, Jenkins foreshadowed such oddities as Mrs. Miller and William Hung. Possessed of a lifelong belief in her nonexistent gifts, this big-hearted dowager might seem a self-contained target for travesty. Yet Temperley’s affectionate restraint generates as much empathy as helpless laughter. With gay accompanist Cosme McMoon’s recollections giving the audience a sympathetic vantage point, “Souvenir” at base is a sweetly cracked paean to the valor of the deluded and those who protect them.

And the lulz they bring every so often.

You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don’t alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that need altering.
