Looking at Obama and the Republican candidates, it’s hard for me not to suspect that it’s not all according to an orchestrated script. Obama has in many ways been more successful than Bush at getting things done for the oligarchs. “See, look at those crazy Republicans! We’ve got to have four more years of that nice, sane, reasonable corporatist milquetoast.”

Well, depends on how it works. If it’s a real public option – anyone can choose it at any time – then it could evolve to single payer if it puts private insurance companies out of business. The PO passed by the (national) House didn’t have this, IIRC. You could choose the PO only if you were not covered by employer-provided private insurance.

Maybe Norquist wanted to spare Obama the embarrassment of having to reject just letting the Bush tax cuts expire. After all, nobody wants to balance the budget. Obama wants his “grand bargain” to run on and the rich just want MORE MONEY.
