London Calling is a fine choice. It is one of those albums that redefined rock music for a generation. In the same way that this album redefined music in the late 70′s and 80′s, I think Nirvana’s Nevermind did much the same for the 90′.

The Stars are the Styx by Sturgeon is a great collection of his short stories. Definitely one of the masters of the genre.
The Helliconia Trilogy by Brian Aldiss is also fantastic. Right up there with Dune in terms of world building. Compelling reading. (nobody mentioned it yet, so I had to mention it)
I agree with a lot of the recommendations here, but I would skip the Dark Materials books… I just read them recently, and I would have enjoyed them a lot more in high school. (sorry for you fans…)
