TomThumb wrote a new diary post: Income Inequality and Violence.
In The Spirit Level book, Wilkinson & Pickett needed a measure of violence and used the number and rate of international homicides. (The United Nations Surveys on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems.) They plotted the numbers for homicide against their data on income inequality for individual countries. The chart is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrtomthumb/7106071205/ The [...]

TomThumb commented on the blog post Alan Simpson: One Tit Down, 309,999,999 to Go
Is Mr. Simpson the American version of the Marquis St. EvreMonde in A Tale of Two Cities:?????????
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Tale_of_Two_Cities
Superior. (not one of the ‘little people’ he referred to in his famous video. Elitist.
Aloof. He doesn’t ever respond to the substance of his opponents criticisms (If he did he would look like an idiot.) Instead, he goes on and on with his own falsehoods about SS, and then he looks like, well…… Facts never seem to permeate his cranial cavity. Like how well funded the NYS pension system is. “the sky is falling” or “the Boomers are going to destroy us.” is all Simpson can utter.
Incorrigible. Still running around thinking that he and ‘shorty’ still have something to say despite overwhelming evidence that the American people reject their views.
Cruel. For women, whose SS benefits are lower on average than the average SS benefit, calling older Americans greedy is 100% sadistic. The American Social Security benefit when compared to the social security of other countries is pretty meagre.
These guys are professional liars.

TomThumb commented on the blog post NATO Agrees to New Timeline for Afghanistan
David. D. Sanger has been beating the drums for war with Iran for years and he really cannot be trusted. Why would you want to cite his work? He has been seeing nuclear weapons in Iran despite all evidence to the contrary for years. Oh, well, it is not your fault if there are no real honest brokers left at the NYTimes regarding war reporting.

TomThumb commented on the blog post It’s Still a Fiscal Cliff If You’re Headed Downhill
What did that Occupy Marine Vet yell at the cops attacking unarmed Occupy protestors??
I would like to yell that to Nancy Pelosi:
There’s no honor in this Nancy Pelosi. Shame on you for not going on the offensive and countering the Republican and the centrist Democrats as they purport to cut Social Security, Medicare and the other safety net programs. Shame on you. There is no honor in strip mining Americans who paid ahead 2.6 trillion dollars into the Social Security Trust fund, just so you can transfer taxes-they-did-not-have-to-pay to the Rich, one percenters. There is no honor in what you are doing, Nancy Pelosi. At the very least you could have pointed out that the deficit is from two unfunded wars, unfettered military spending, and record low taxes on the rich, in addition to reduced revenue from a down economy. There is no honor in attacking the retirement security of Americans, now or in the future. There is no honor in screwing young people too busy to know what is going on, out of their future retirement. There is no honor in what you are doing, Nancy Pelosi!!

Hey. David! Didn’t you write this piece completely analyzing how simpson-bowles’ recommendations were a benefit cut through progressive indexing, age of eligibility changes and raised tax rates??

True. That would have to be a very big chart if you want to include more countries in addition to the American Empire. Like the size of a large living room./s Good connection and good comment. Civilian deaths due to our nation’s psychopathic wars are a tragedy which I care deeply about. See here. Thanks for [...]

Often feels that way, Wendy. But there are moments when I see that it is the same old absurdity that my father faced in the nineteen sixties, the classic conflict between a world trying to be born and faceless forces working to tamp down dissent and to enforce Babbitt like conformity. It is absurd because [...]

Thank you.
We (the big WE) have to refashion our society along principles which we have known to be more fair since 1948. Article 26 of the International Declaration of Human Rights guarantees the right to an education.

TomThumb wrote a new diary post: Income Inequality & Educational ‘Performance’.
Income inequality is associated with increases in social and health problems. The associated problems which increase are levels of social mistrust, mental illness and drug use, reduced life expectancy and infant mortality, obesity, lower children’s educational performance, teenage births, more homicides, larger imprisonment rates, more homicides, and reduced social mobility. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrtomthumb/6960000128/ Educational performance is the [...]

TomThumb commented on the blog post NATO Summit Roundup: Police Threaten Occupy Chicago Protesters & More
Wasn’t that a recording of a pre-emptive stop because the cops thought they could extort information about upcoming events/plans? of these individuals at Occupy Chicago???? Stopped on suspicion of going to Occupy Chicago?? Is that illegal future thoughts? Was that a stop to prevent a pre-crime?? Is Occupy Chicago or contemplation of Occupy Chicago an illegal activity??

I am sorry to hear that they did that to Medicare. Hopefully enough people will get tired of having their birthright sold back to them in the form of privatized education and healthcare. You have to be willing to serve in the Armed
SuicideServices to be eligible for universal (Veterans only) healthcare. Sorry about that Blue. [...] -

I just really, really wish I could have found a way to give you a look at the graph on page 13. It is like looking at the five income grades the Brits use to create income quintiles and seeing how mortality rises as you move from the top managers to the professionals, to the [...]

The Big idea. ‘ The big idea is that what matters in determining mortality and health in a society is less the overall wealth of that society and more how evenly wealth is distributed. The more equally wealth is distributed the better the health of that society.” The Editors, British Medical Journal, 1996. Life Expectancy is higher in [...] -
