When I look at the pictures of Moore on Weather Underground, I’m amazed that the death toll isn’t much higher.

vagreen commented on the diary post BREAKING: Extremely large and damaging tornado hits Moore Oklahoma by cmaukonen.
I’ve heard the scenario for even 2°C of warming is pretty unpleasant and 4°C is likely to involve a lot of what you’re talking about. I can’t imagine 6°C.
Our can’t do attitude and our refusal to make even modest sacrifices to save the planet is just appalling.

Where will they go? The Southwest is supposed to become even drier because of global warming and the East Coast will face rising sea levels and more frequent and severe hurricanes.

Good to see that the response has already started.

vagreen commented on the diary post When Your Safety Cuts Into Industry’s Bottom Line You Lose…Your Fingers by spocko.
The “freedom” to have your fingers cut off is hopefully one of the “freedoms” that we will lose soon. We have lost so many other things called “freedoms” over the years: The “freedom” of black people to be owned as slaves. The “freedom” of wives to be beaten or raped by their husbands. The “freedom” [...]

Excellent article, spocko. This is appalling but not surprising. It reminds of what I heard about the recent disaster in the Bangladesh garment factory. Bangladeshi labor activists were trying to get Walmart and the Gap to sign onto a program for improving workplace safety. It would have cost a dime per garment surcharge. They said [...]

vagreen commented on the blog post Obama White House Tries To Distance Itself From AP Spying Scandal By Citing Support For Bill It Lobbied Against
I really want to stop cheating on you, baby. That’s why I’m in favor of law that would criminalize my behavior. I told you I was in favor of such a law a few years ago, but then I lobbied against it. Now I’m in favor of it again, and you really should believe me this time.

OK, I get it. Congress wanted an investigation. They got it. Therefore they have absolutely no right to question the way the investigation was conducted.

vagreen commented on the diary post The Ohio Tea Party is Outraged–by Republican Governor John Kasich’s Budget by Ohio Barbarian.
Very interesting. I think that part of the reason why Kasich is driving the Tea Party nuts is that he’s moved to the left a little, but it’s also because conservatism has moved so far to the right.

Les, thanks for joining us today. This is the first time I’ve heard of your book, but I’m very interested. Could you tell us more about Jim Cramer and his emphasis on breaking the law?

vagreen commented on the diary post Top U.S. Terrorist Group: The FBI by David Swanson.
Tidwell argued that someone thinking about the general idea of committing crimes should be set up and then prosecuted, because as long as they’re not in prison the possibility exists that someone other than the FBI could encourage them to, and assist them in, actually committing a crime. “You and I could sit here, go online, [...]

vagreen commented on the blog post It’s Time for MoveOn to Move and Stop Blocking Change
Very good post, Brian. This reminds me of what Moveon did in 2007 with the opposition to the war in Iraq. Instead of pushing for a complete withdrawal, which would have made the Democratic Party uncomfortable, Moveon tried to get the antiwar movement to focus on fighting the surge. It was very divisive and helped to neuter the antiwar movement as a strong and independent force.

vagreen commented on the diary post NASA & NOAA: 2012 Was In Top-10 Warmest Years For Globe On Record by WeatherDem.
Indeed, this was the warmest La Niña year on record
The Conference of Parties summit produced no meaningful climate action. Countries agreed to have something on paper by 2015 and enacted by 2020. If everything goes as planned, significant carbon reductions wouldn’t occur until later in the 2020s – too late to ensure <2°C warming by 2100. [...]

vagreen commented on the diary post Why No Platinum Coin? Probably Because Republicans Used It to Distract from Debt Ceiling Issues by Phoenix Woman.
Obama supporters in 2011: Barack HAD to agree to the spending cuts. There were no other options. What did you want him to do, Firebaggers? Let the GOP throw us into default and cause another Great Depression? Obama supporters in 2013: Barack is willing to play chicken with the GOP over the debt ceiling! There [...]

vagreen commented on the diary post Why No Platinum Coin? Probably Because Republicans Used It to Distract from Debt Ceiling Issues by Phoenix Woman.
The contempt of Democratic Party loyalists for progressives who vote for third parties knows no bounds. If you voted for Jill Stein, you’re an absolute piece of shit for risking a Romney administration. However, when Obama and the Dems chooses to risk a second Great Depression by playing chicken with the GOP over the debt [...]
