George Bush on Dec 17, 1992 signed NAFTA initially. Clinton happened to be a typical Southern Democrat in that he was an economic conservative, so he saw nothing wrong with it, and went about enforcing it.

Whatever comes out of the house has to be passed by the Senate before it can go to Obama’s desk; so how exactly are the Republicans going to call Obama’s bluff? Now if Harry Reid and democrats in the Senate vote for it, then you might be right.

  • This comment does not pertain to the subject matter, but Obama is nothing more than a gigantic Blue dog Democrat – including all the malice that these creeps bring to politics. Socially moderate but economically conservative; these bastards have more in common with the Republican party than they do the theoretical Democratic party I remember that included the likes Hubert Humphrey.

All everyone has to do is re-read Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle to find the type of society that the Republicans and their Tea-party allies want. It really is that simple.

http://www.juancole.com/ I suggest everyone read Juan Cole daily. It seems there was a backroom deal with the Pakistani’s where we could enter Pakistan at will to kill terrorists suspected to be hiding in Pakistan. What the U.S. Government is doing is the same kabuki dance that Pakistan is doing for their own population; they are [...]

Who is talking about paying off the deficit in one year? Why does anyone need to pay it off in 3-5 years? If you reduce the deficit by 250 billion over 50 years, you have reduced the debt by 12.5 trillion.

No one is saying that Obama can’t give a great speech; but that is all he did Wednesday – he gave a really good speech. The proof is in the pudding so to speak. How will he negotiate with the fanatics from the Republican side. I expect him to cave again and again. This man [...]

Well if they weren’t both trying to starve the beast for funds, the easiest solution that would have saved the government 100 billion per year for the next 10 years would have been to let the tax cuts expire, restoring them to Clinton levels of taxation. But that is too obvious!

  • I don’t think American’s are bright enough to do the same thing in this country.

  • Well I am assuming the Republicans think that only white women get abortions. You have to remember that Texas has size-able minorities -black and Hispanic that are growing in population to where in 2050 the whites in Texas will be a minority. They are just trying to amp up the white population any way they [...]

From Krugman’s blog early this morning:

    FDR, Reagan, and Obama

Some readers may recall that back during the Democratic primary Barack Obama shocked many progressives by praising Ronald Reagan as someone who brought America a “sense of dynamism and entrepreneurship that had been missing.” I was among those who found this deeply troubling — because the idea that Reagan brought a transfomation in American dynamism is a right-wing myth, not borne out by the facts. (There was a surge in productivity and innovation — but it happened in the 90s, under Clinton, not under Reagan).

All the usual suspects pooh-poohed these concerns; it was ridiculous, they said, to think of Obama as a captive of right-wing mythology.

But are you so sure about that now?

And here’s this, from Thomas Ferguson: Obama saying

We didn’t actually, I think, do what Franklin Delano Roosevelt did, which was basically wait for six months until the thing had gotten so bad that it became an easier sell politically because we thought that was irresponsible. We had to act quickly.

Instead of tax cuts at the beginning of the Bush administration, why not tax increases to pay for the wars that Bush wanted to start? There would have been no deficits to speak of, let alone be worried about.

  • Now can we get Steve Benen and John Cole to admit that what was essentially passed off as a great progressive victory is republican health care reform.
